A record you can check

Who we are
Gulmarg Snowkings is a ski school and backcountry guiding operator based in Gulmarg, Kashmir, founded in 2006 by Shafat Ahmad Tantray and Bashir Ahmad Mir. We are registered with the Jammu & Kashmir Tourism Department under permit no. JKAT00005678, our backcountry team is certified through AIARE, Avalanche Canada and the Kashmir Avalanche Association, and in nearly twenty seasons we have guided more than 2,500 skiers and snowboarders from over 40 countries with zero avalanche accidents among our guided clients.
We teach complete beginners on the Gulmarg Beginner Slopes. We guide expert skiers on Apharwat's uncontrolled faces. We run a ski shop, we rent full avalanche safety kits, and we organise trips that start and end at Srinagar airport so nobody has to work out the Tangmarg road on their own in a snowstorm.
Ski & snowboard packages
Six complete trips, airport to airport. Accommodation, Srinagar transfers, equipment, lift access and instruction or guiding, run by one operator. They differ by what you can already ride and how long you have.

Beginner ski packages
One instructor to yourself, daily lessons on the Gulmarg Beginner Slopes, building to a first descent at Kongdoori.

View packagesWhat Gulmarg is doing right now
Live weather and snow for Gulmarg village and Mt Apharwat, plus the avalanche advisory. Every reading carries the time it was issued, and we mark it clearly when data is stale rather than showing it as current.
Weather
Snow forecast
Avalanche advisory
Conditions data is a planning aid, not a substitute for the official advisory or for a decision made on the slope. Read how we assess avalanche risk.
Why any of that matters
Some Gulmarg guides are excellent. Some have never dug a snowpit. From a hotel lobby, on your second day here, you cannot tell those two groups apart.
-
A permit number you can check
JKAT00005678, issued by the Jammu & Kashmir Tourism Department. A permit is either in the register or it is not, so you can confirm ours before you book rather than take our word for it.
-
Certifying bodies, named
Our backcountry team is trained through AIARE, Avalanche Canada and the Kashmir Avalanche Association. Naming the body matters, because it is what lets you go and read what the training actually covers.
-
Terrain choice before equipment
Beacons and airbags matter enormously, but they are what you fall back on after the decision has gone wrong. We plan the day against the advisory, not against the itinerary, and turning around is a normal outcome.
-
A local Kashmiri company
Founded by two people from this valley and still based in the village. Our guides and instructors are local, and they speak English, Hindi and Urdu.
What riders say
We publish reviews only on the platforms where you can verify them yourself, with both profiles linked so you can read every one, not just the flattering ones.
Tell us your dates and what you can ski
We reply with what the mountain is realistically likely to give you in that window, and if the honest answer is to come a fortnight later, we will say so. The season runs 15 December 2026 to 31 March 2027.
