Gulmarg's backcountry starts about thirty seconds after you step off the gondola. That proximity is the thing that makes this mountain unusual, and also the thing that gets people hurt.
Backcountry skiing in Gulmarg means lift-accessed terrain above 3,980 m with no patrol, no marking, no closures and almost no avalanche control, plus skin-access terrain beyond that. The gondola's upper station puts you on the Apharwat ridge at a height that would take three hours of climbing anywhere else. Everything you can see from up there is unmanaged mountain.
The access advantage, and what it hides
Most backcountry skiing is rationed by effort. You climb for two hours, you get one run, and the climb itself gives you time to look at the snow, feel the wind, notice the whumphing underfoot, watch how the surface changes with aspect as you gain height. That two hours is not dead time. It is the assessment, and it happens whether you intend it or not.
Gulmarg removes it. You can be standing on top with cold legs, twenty minutes after finishing breakfast, with no information at all about the snowpack you're about to commit to. The lift has given you the altitude without giving you any of the observations that normally come attached to it.
This is not a small point. It is the central structural fact about skiing here, and it explains most of what goes wrong.
Consider the two ways a skier arrives at the same piece of terrain. The touring skier has spent ninety minutes on the skin track. They have felt the surface change from wind-scoured to soft at the treeline. They have noticed the skin track collapsing under them at 3,600 m and not at 3,200 m. They have seen the ridge crest loaded on the lee side. By the time they reach the top they have a working model of the snowpack, assembled almost involuntarily. The lift skier has felt none of that. They have looked out of a gondola window at a white mountain.
That's why our backcountry days start on the lower mountain with a beacon check and a short assessment run before anyone goes to the top, and why we choose the first descent of the day based on what the snow did overnight rather than on what anyone came here to ski. We are reconstructing, deliberately and in about forty-five minutes, the information the lift took away.

A standard guided backcountry day runs four to six descents off the ridge, roughly 4,000 to 6,000 vertical metres depending on conditions, group fitness and lift queues. Storm days often deliver more, because everyone else stays in the hotel.
That vertical figure deserves a moment. Four to six thousand vertical metres in a day is a substantial amount of skiing by any standard, and it is a considerably harder day than the same number would be at 2,000 m in the Alps. Visitors who have skied 6,000 m days in Europe and arrive expecting the same experience discover on day two that altitude, dense lower-mountain snow and long exits combine into something more demanding. Pace accordingly for the first three days.
Skin-access days add the terrain the lift can't reach: the far side of the Apharwat massif, the ground above the Babareshi drainage, and the long line toward Drang. Those are full days with an early start and a committing exit. See our Ski Touring page for those objectives in detail.
Terrain by commitment level
Commitment, not difficulty. The distinction matters here more than it does at a resort. A run can be technically easy and highly committing, long, remote, with an exit that puts you a long way from help. Gulmarg has several of those, and they catch strong skiers who are calibrated on pitch rather than consequence.
Introductory, Monkey Hill, Main Gondola Bowl, and the lower-angle ridge shoulders. Open, forgiving pitch, short exits, easy to bail from. This is where we take the first day of almost every trip regardless of how strong the group says it is. Nobody has ever been harmed by an easy first day; several weeks have been damaged by a hard one.
Intermediate committing, The Back. North-facing, cold-snow-holding, long. The pitch is moderate for most of it. The exit is the part people underestimate, and it is the reason we don't ski it late in the day or with a group we haven't already watched.
Sunshine Peak and the Babareshi drainage, a different character again. Trees, lower elevation, protected snow, and the one place on this mountain that stays skiable when the alpine is a whiteout. The flat sections in the exit are the catch, and they are a much bigger catch on a snowboard.
Advanced, Looker's Left & Right, Far Far Side, the Drang descent. Sustained pitch, terrain traps, and exits that put you well away from the resort. Guided only, and only on the right day.
Expert, conditions-dependent, Shark Fin, Great White, the Doggy Chutes. The steepest lines here. We ski these with groups we know, on days the snowpack justifies it, and we decline them more often than we ski them. If a Gulmarg operator agrees to take you down Shark Fin on the first day of your trip without having seen you ski, that tells you something useful about the operator.
How the Kashmiri snowpack differs from what you've skied
Worth understanding even if you never make a stability decision yourself, because it explains why local knowledge is not interchangeable with general avalanche training.
Kashmir's snow arrives with Western Disturbances, extratropical low-pressure systems that track eastward off the Mediterranean and Caspian and collide with the Pir Panjal. They tend to come in cycles rather than steadily: several days of storm, then a long clear high-pressure spell.
Two consequences follow, and neither is intuitive to skiers trained elsewhere.
Within-storm layering. These systems frequently arrive relatively warm and wet at village elevation and cold and dry high on the mountain, within the same storm. That produces density and temperature contrasts inside a single storm layer, at different elevations, on the same day. A stability observation made at 3,200 m may not describe the snow at 3,900 m at all, and the elevation band where the character changes moves between storms.
Between-storm faceting. The long clear cold spells that make Gulmarg's bluebird days so good are also doing something to the surface. Prolonged clear, cold, high-pressure weather drives strong temperature gradients near the snow surface, which grows weak faceted crystals. Then the next storm arrives and loads that weakness. The best-looking week of weather in the forecast is often the week that builds the problem the following storm sits on top of.
The practical consequence: the buried layer that matters this week is a local question with a local answer, and the answer comes from people who have been digging in this snowpack all season. A skier with an AIARE 1 from Colorado has excellent general training and no information about this specific snowpack. Both are needed; neither substitutes for the other.
What you need to bring
Skis. 100 mm underfoot or wider will make your week better. Below 90 mm and you'll work harder than you need to. Length matters less than width here, and stiffness matters more than either, the snow is deep but it is not always light, and a soft ski that floats beautifully in a foot of cold smoke gets overwhelmed in the denser snow lower down.
Boots that you can ski in for six hours a day, seven days running. More Gulmarg weeks are ruined by boots than by conditions. If your boots are marginal at home, they will be unacceptable by day three here.
Your own transceiver, if you own one and know it. If you don't, we issue transceiver, shovel and probe with every guided backcountry day. ABS airbag packs are available from our ski shop.
Layers for a 25°C swing. You will be sweating on the traverse and standing still in wind on the ridge in the same hour. A proper insulated jacket that lives in your pack and comes out at every regroup is the single most useful item most visitors don't bring.
Goggles for flat light, not just bright light. Low-light lenses get used here more than visitors expect, and a storm day with the wrong lens is a wasted day.
Something to eat that works when it's cold. Energy bars go rock-hard at -15°C.

Permits, registration and what the rules actually are
This is poorly explained everywhere online, and the confusion costs people days.
J&K Tourism registers ski schools and backcountry guiding operators, and requires registered guides for backcountry access. Gulmarg Snowkings holds that registration under permit no. JKAT00005678. In practice this means the guide carries the registration, not the client, you do not need to apply for anything yourself, and you should be sceptical of anyone telling you otherwise for a fee.
What the registration is not: it is not an avalanche-safety certification, and it is not a technical guiding qualification. It is a business licence to operate. Plenty of registered operators in this valley hold the permit and nothing else. The avalanche and guiding credentials are separate, they are voluntary, and they are the ones worth asking about. The practical question to ask any Gulmarg operator, ours included: which specific certifications does the individual guiding me hold, from which body, and when did they last renew? An operator who answers that in one sentence is telling you something. An operator who redirects to the company's general experience is telling you something else.
Access beyond the immediate resort area, the long descents toward Drang and Tangmarg, and anything that takes you into terrain requiring a road pickup, involves logistics arranged in advance rather than decided on the ridge. Transport has to be positioned at the bottom, timings have to be agreed, and someone has to know where you're going. We arrange this as part of the day; it is not something to improvise.
Fitness, altitude, and what the vertical actually asks
The number that catches people is not the pitch. It's the altitude combined with the repetition.
Skiing hard at 3,500–3,980 m is aerobically different from skiing hard at 2,000 m, and almost every visitor arriving from sea level underestimates it. The effect is largest on days two and three, after the first day's adrenaline has worn off and before any acclimatisation has occurred. If you arrive from Delhi or an international flight, plan the first day as a shorter one. Not because you're unfit, because you're unacclimatised, and those are different problems with different solutions.
The second factor is that Gulmarg's descents are long. A 1,300 m run is a lot of continuous skiing on ungroomed snow, and the legs go before the lungs do. Visitors calibrated on 400 m European lift laps find the sustained descents more tiring than the vertical total suggests.
Practical preparation that actually helps, in order of return:
- Legs, specifically eccentric strength. Squats and step-downs beat cardio for how skiing hard on ungroomed snow feels on day four.
- Sustained aerobic base. Not intervals: long steady work. You want the capacity to do six hours a day for seven consecutive days.
- Boots sorted before you fly. Any boot problem you have at home is a trip-ending problem here.
- Two easy days built into the plan. Not rest days. Shorter days, early in the trip, that let you arrive at day four intact.
Common mistakes we see every season
Listed because avoiding them costs nothing and each one reliably damages a week.
Booking four days. The weather here works in multi-day cycles. Four days is not enough to contain one.
Overstating ability at the booking stage. It doesn't get you better terrain. It gets you a plan built on wrong assumptions that has to be rebuilt on day one anyway, usually after you've been taken somewhere you didn't enjoy.
Skiing the first bluebird day after a storm as hard as possible. It is the most tempting day of the trip and it carries the highest fresh-snow instability. Restraint on that day is the whole discipline.
Sitting out storm days. Covered above and worth repeating. Those are frequently the best skiing of the week.
Bringing skis that are too narrow. A 88 mm ski works, and it will make you work.
Treating the exit as an afterthought. More Gulmarg days go wrong in the last hour than in the first five.
Arriving without having touched a transceiver since the shop demo. Owning one and being able to use one under time pressure are unrelated states.
Getting the most out of a backcountry week
Come for a week, not four days. Weather here works in cycles of several days. A four-day trip is a coin flip on whether it lands in a storm cycle, a clear spell, or the transition. Seven days in the core season almost always contains at least one full storm cycle and the days after it.
Allow two days before your hardest objective. Partly altitude, partly boots and gear, partly the guide needing to have seen you ski. Groups who ask for the biggest line on day one get told no; groups who ask on day four get a genuine assessment.
Ski the storm days. Visitors treat storm days as write-offs and sit in the hotel. Those are frequently the best days of the week, the trees around Babareshi and the lower-angle terrain are excellent in flat light, and the mountain is empty.
Don't chase what the internet promised you. The mountain gives what it gives in the week you happen to be here. Groups holding a fixed list of runs have measurably worse weeks than groups who came for good snow.
Getting here, and the days you lose to it
Backcountry trips get planned around the skiing and undone by the logistics, so it's worth being realistic about the shape of a trip.
Gulmarg is reached via Srinagar, and the road up takes roughly an hour and a half to two hours in good conditions and considerably longer when it's snowing hard, which, in the season you want to be here, it frequently is. Heavy snowfall occasionally closes the road entirely for a period.
The practical consequences for a backcountry trip:
Don't plan to ski on your arrival day. Between the flight, the drive and the altitude, the first day is a travel day whatever your itinerary says.
Build a buffer before your outbound flight. A road closure or a Srinagar weather delay on your last morning is a real possibility, and missing an international connection is an expensive way to end a good week.
Seven nights on the ground gives you five or six skiing days, not seven. Plan the trip length accordingly, this is the most common reason people feel their trip was too short.
Bring your gear with you rather than relying on finding it here. Ski shops exist and ours is one of them, but a specific boot or a splitboard part is not something to count on locating locally.
Accommodation is in the village at 2,650 m, which is a considerable advantage for acclimatisation compared with destinations where you sleep high.
