Mt Apharwat is the mountain that Gulmarg is built underneath, and almost everything written about it online is wrong about how high it is.
The summit stands at 4,210 m (13,812 ft). It is part of the Pir Panjal, the outer Himalayan range that separates the Kashmir Valley from the plains to the south. It is the reason people fly here.

The height question, settled
This needs stating first because the confusion is genuinely damaging to trip planning and because the internet has not resolved it.

Why the wrong numbers are everywhere. Most sites describing Gulmarg are describing a gondola ride, not a mountain. They know the lift goes very high and they know the peak is higher, and they publish something in between, 4,200 m and 4,300 m are the two most common. Both are the result of averaging two figures that describe different things.
We use 3,980 m for the station throughout this site, and we note where other sources give 3,950 m rather than quietly picking one. Thirty metres changes nothing about your day. It changes a great deal about whether a site that states one figure without acknowledging the other is worth trusting on anything else.
The mountain, described
Apharwat is a broad massif rather than a single sharp peak. That matters for skiing, because it means the mountain offers a long ridge with terrain falling away on multiple sides rather than one face with one fall line.
The ridge is the organising feature of the entire skiing experience here. It runs off the summit, the gondola's upper station sits on it, and essentially every out-of-bounds descent on this mountain begins with a traverse, a bootpack or a short skin along it. Where you leave the ridge determines everything about your descent, the aspect, the pitch, the snow, and which drainage you end up in.
The faces fall away from that ridge in several directions. Because the massif is broad, the aspects genuinely differ, and on any given day one of them is considerably better than the others. That is the mountain's defining advantage: on a mountain with one aspect, a bad wind direction ruins the day; here it just moves you.
The vertical. Roughly 1,300 m from the upper station to the base, and more again from the summit if you're descending directly from it. That is a large descent by any standard, and it is available repeatedly.
The treeline sits well below the alpine terrain, which means the tree skiing is a descent away rather than a traverse away, a geographic fact with real consequences for planning a flat-light day.
The summit, and getting to it
The part of this mountain most visitors never see, and the one that most distinguishes an ambitious day here.
It is not a lift ride. From the Phase 2 upper station at 3,980 m, the summit at 4,210 m is roughly 230 vertical metres of ascent along the ridge, on foot or on skins. That is the single most misunderstood fact about Gulmarg.
How long it takes depends on conditions, snow surface, wind and how acclimatised you are. Skinning at 4,000 m is not skinning at 2,000 m, and visitors from sea level routinely find it harder than their fitness predicts. Practical guidance on that is on the Ski Touring page.
Why bother. Three reasons, honestly ranked. It is the actual top of the mountain, and standing there is a different experience from standing at a lift station 230 m below it. It opens aspects and lines that the ridge below doesn't reach. And it is the entry point to the biggest descents available here.
When it's worth it. Stable conditions, good visibility, a group that's acclimatised, and an early enough start that the descent isn't rushed. Wind on the ridge is the variable that most often makes it a bad idea, it is exposed, and a summit push in strong wind is unpleasant at best.

Back toward the resort
The shortest exits and the terrain you can lap repeatedly, because it returns you to the lift line.
Main Gondola Bowl, open terrain within sight of the lift, moderate by this mountain's standards, and the closest thing here to conventional off-piste. The natural first descent off the ridge and the one where a skier can be watched.
Looker's Left & Right, two adjacent lines, named from the perspective of someone at the bottom looking up. Sustained steep pitch with a confined feel that changes how a fall behaves. The most famous terrain on the mountain and the most commonly misspelled, it is Looker's, not Lockers, and it is a pair rather than a single gully.
Shark Fin, Great White and The Doggy Chutes, the steepest lines here, each with its own entrance problem and its own runout. Sustained, confined, and unforgiving of a mistake.
Across the back of the massif
The Backcountry, north-facing, and the best snow-holding terrain on the mountain because of it. Long. The pitch is moderate for most of its length and the commitment is the exit, which is the thing visiting skiers most consistently get backwards.
Far Far Side, big, long and well away from the resort. An all-day objective that puts you a considerable distance from anything.
Toward the drainages
Descents that finish away from Gulmarg. The skiing is the first half of the day.
To Drang, a long line off the ridge toward Drang village, and one of the biggest vertical days available here. Finishes at a road rather than at the resort, which means transport arranged in advance.
To Tangmarg, the long ski-out toward Tangmarg. Useful to know about, and occasionally the right call at the end of a big day.
Babareshi, reached by descending into the drainage below the alpine. Tree skiing, protected snow, and a genuinely different character from everything above. The answer on poor-visibility days, with a flat exit that catches out anyone arriving tired and slow.
The lower shoulders
Monkey Hill, lower-angle, tree-adjacent, forgiving pitch, short exits. The day-one zone for almost every visitor regardless of what they say about their ability.
Sunshine Peak, a distinct objective with its own aspect and its own timing window, and one of the less-skied features here.
Aspects, and when each one is in condition
The most practical section on this page. Apharwat's breadth means aspect choice is a real decision every day rather than a theoretical one.
North and north-east. The Backcountry and the shaded ridge terrain. Cold snow survives here longest after a storm, several days longer than it would on the sunny aspects, and considerably longer than it would anywhere with more traffic. If it's been days since the last snow, this is where the skiing still is.
East. Good early-morning snow that deteriorates as the sun comes onto it. There is a real window on east aspects, it's in the morning, and skiing them late is a different and worse experience than skiing them at nine.
South and south-west. Sun-affected quickly. Fine on the day the sun first works them, crusted by the following morning. Counter-intuitively these are often the right choice on a flat-light storm day, the light reads better on them and the snow hasn't been baked.
West. The afternoon aspect. Holds better than south and goes off later in the day, which frequently makes it the correct last-descent choice.
Below the treeline. Babareshi and the drainage. Protected from both wind and sun better than anything in the alpine, and consistently the most underrated terrain on the mountain.
The wind overlay. Aspect determines sun. Wind determines where the snow physically ends up, and the Apharwat ridge moves a very large amount of it, stripping the windward side, loading the lee. Which side is which changes with each storm, so a face that was scoured last week may be loaded this week. That's a judgement question rather than a map question and it belongs to Avalanche Safety.
Reading the mountain from the bottom
Something guides do automatically and visitors can learn in a day, and it costs nothing.
From the village you can see a substantial part of the massif. What's worth looking at, every morning:
Where the snow has been stripped and where it's been deposited. Wind-scoured ground looks different from loaded ground even at distance, texture, colour, the way light sits on it.
Whether the ridge is in cloud. If the top is capped, the alpine will be flat light regardless of what the valley is doing.
How much of the mountain is holding snow versus showing rock. Coverage varies enormously through a season and between seasons, and the honest state of the mountain is visible from the base.
Where yesterday's tracks are. They tell you which aspects have been skied and, by absence, which haven't.
What the plume off the summit is doing. Snow blowing off the ridge is the most immediate wind indicator available and it's visible from the village.
The ridge itself
Worth its own section, because it is the piece of terrain a skier spends more time on than any single descent and almost nobody describes it.
It is a corridor, not a destination. You arrive on it from the lift, and everything that follows is a decision about where to leave it. Some days that decision is made within fifty metres of the station; some days it involves half an hour of traversing or bootpacking.
It is exposed. The ridge catches wind that the faces below don't, and the difference between the temperature on the ridge and the temperature two hundred metres down a sheltered face is substantial. This is the specific reason groups get cold on this mountain, not the descents, the standing about on the ridge deciding.
The snow on it tells you things. Ridge-crest snow is the most heavily wind-worked surface on the mountain, and what it looks like, scoured to old surface, freshly drifted, sastrugi, or a soft drift that collapses underfoot, is the most immediate read available on what the wind has been doing and therefore where the snow has gone.
Cornices form along it. Wind builds them, they fail further back than they look, and the edge of a ridge is rarely where it appears to be from above. Ridge travel here means staying well back from an edge whose real position isn't visible.
Visibility on it changes fastest. The ridge is the first thing to go into cloud and the last to come out, which means the decision about where to descend often has to be made with less information than you'd like.
Coverage, rock and early or late season
An honest section, because the mountain is not the same in December as in February.
Early season. Coverage builds through December and into January. The upper mountain can be thin early, rock and scree can be exposed on wind-affected ground, and the drainages may not have filled in enough for the exits to be pleasant. Genuinely good storms happen in December, and the mountain underneath them is less filled in than it will be later.
Mid-season. The base is established, the terrain traps are buried, the drainages are filled and the mountain skis as it's meant to.
Late season. North aspects hold winter snow well into March; sunny aspects transition on a predictable schedule and become a different sport. Coverage on the upper mountain shortens at the end of the season and rock reappears on the wind-scoured ground first.
What varies year to year. Total coverage varies enormously between seasons here, more than in ranges with steadier accumulation. A thin year and a deep year are genuinely different mountains, particularly in the drainages and on the rockier ground. Anyone telling you what Apharwat is like in a given month without reference to the year is describing an average that may not exist.
Naming, and why it's inconsistent everywhere
A short and genuinely useful section, because a skier researching this mountain will meet contradictory names within about ten minutes.
Apharwat is also written Affarwat and Afarwat. Same mountain.
Looker's Left & Right is very frequently written "Lockers." It is Looker's, from the perspective of a person at the bottom looking up at the face. Sites publishing "Lockers Gully" are copying each other rather than the mountain.
Drang and Drung both appear online for the same village and the same descent.
"Phase 2" refers to the second stage of the gondola, not to a piece of terrain, though it is widely used as shorthand for the terrain the second stage accesses.
The Backcountry on your site is the same terrain some sources call "The Back."
Naming inconsistency is a symptom of a place written about mostly by people who haven't been there. Publishing the correct local names, and noting the common errors, is both useful and a signal of who wrote the page.
