Gulmarg Ski Terrain Guide

Gulmarg is not laid out like a ski resort, and the single biggest cause of a wasted day here is a skier applying a resort's mental map to a mountain that doesn't have one.

There are, functionally, two mountains. Below the top of the gondola's first phase there is a developed area with lifts, gentle pitch and something resembling a conventional resort. Above the second phase there is a large, unmanaged, unmarked alpine mountain rising to 4,210 m (13,812 ft) with no patrol, no closures and no trail signs. They are joined by a cable car and by very little else.

The 230 metres that confuse everyone. The gondola does not go to the top of the mountain. The Phase 2 upper station sits roughly 230 vertical metres below the Apharwat summit, and reaching the summit means walking or skinning a ridge from the station. Some published figures for the station give 3,950 m, Wikipedia's Gulmarg Gondola article gives 3,950 m in its infobox and 3,980 m in its body text. Sites quoting 4,200 m or 4,300 m for the gondola are conflating the lift station with the mountain.

Maximum lift-served vertical: roughly 1,300 m, top station to base. That figure, more than any other, is what a visiting skier should be calibrating on. It is a large descent by any standard and it is available repeatedly in a day.

How the mountain is organised

Inbounds: the developed area

The lower mountain, served by lifts, with pitch and pattern that a skier from anywhere in the world will recognise. This is where lessons happen, where beginners progress, and where a bad-weather day is salvaged.

Out of bounds: the real mountain

Above the Phase 2 station. No patrol, no marking, no closures, no organised avalanche control across most of it. The change in required behaviour happens at the top of Phase 2, not at the edge of a groomed run.

Difficulty is not the same as commitment

The most useful idea on this page, and the one that most often gets visiting skiers into trouble.

Difficulty is how hard the skiing is. Pitch, snow, technical demand.

Commitment is what happens if it goes wrong. How far from help, how long the exit, how hard to retreat, where the terrain traps are.

At a European or North American resort these track each other closely, the black runs are both harder and further from the base. On this mountain they come apart completely.

The Backcountry is a good example: moderate pitch for most of its length, and one of the most committing descents here, because the exit is long and puts you a considerable distance from the resort. Strong skiers assess it on pitch, find it unremarkable, and don't account for where it leaves them. That is the single most common terrain miscalculation in Gulmarg.

The inverse also exists. Looker's is steeper than The Backcountry and less committing, because it brings you back toward the base.

Practical rule: ask two questions about any run here, not one. How hard is it, and where does it put me.

Aspect: the thing that decides your day

Aspect matters more than altitude on this mountain. That inverts the assumption most visitors arrive with.

North and north-east. The Backcountry and the shaded ridge terrain. Holds dry cold snow longest. This is where the good snow survives late in a cycle.

East. Excellent early, deteriorates with the sun. Ski it first, not last.

South and south-west. Sun-affected quickly. The right answer on flat-light days when the high north faces are unusable, and the wrong answer in the afternoon on a clear day.

West. The afternoon aspect. Holds better than south, and often the correct last-run choice.

Below the treeline. Babareshi and the drainage. Protected from wind and sun better than anything in the alpine, and the answer on most poor-visibility days.

And the ridge is a wind machine. The Apharwat ridge moves an enormous amount of snow. The windward side gets stripped; the lee side gets loaded. Which is which changes with the storm. Which lift serves what

A practical matter that shapes every day here.

Babyslope and the base area, no lift needed beyond the local drag. Always available.

Phase 1 to Kongdoori (~3,050 m), opens the mid-mountain, the Main Gondola Bowl approach, and the tree skiing below. Runs when Phase 2 doesn't.

The chairlift (to ~3,500 m), Mary's Shoulder side. Independent of Phase 2, and the reason a wind-hold day is a change of plan rather than a lost one.

Phase 2 to the Apharwat upper station (3,980 m), the gateway to everything out of bounds. Also the stage that stops for wind most often.

Nothing serves the summit. The last 230 m to 4,210 m is on foot or skins.

Where to ski, by what kind of day you're having

Your first day here, whatever your level. Monkey Hill and the lower shoulders, or the Main Gondola Bowl. Open, moderate, short exits, easy to retreat from. Nobody has ever been harmed by an easy first day and plenty of weeks have been damaged by a hard one.

The first clear day after a storm. The most beautiful and most instability-loaded day of any cycle. Terrain choice on that day is a judgement question rather than a map question, see Avalanche Safety.

A storm day, flat light. Babareshi and the trees. Visual reference is what makes skiing in flat light possible at all, and the alpine has none. These are frequently the best days of a week and most visitors sit them out in a hotel.

Late in a cycle with everything tracked. Further afield, Far Far Side, Sunshine Peak, or skin access beyond the lift's reach. Finding untracked snow late in a cycle is a knowledge problem rather than a fitness one.

A big day, if the week gives you one. To Drang, Far Far Side, or the summit. These need an early start, stable conditions, and, for Drang, transport arranged at the far end.

The exits, and why they matter more than the descents

Underestimated by almost every visiting skier, and worth its own section.

Several of the best descents on this mountain do not finish where you started. They finish in drainages that lead away from the resort, toward Babareshi, toward Drang, toward Tangmarg. The skiing is the first part of those days. The getting home is the second, and it's longer.

What that means practically:

Some exits are flat. Skiers pole through them. Snowboarders need to carry speed, and knowing where to start pumping costs an hour if you don't have it, see Snowboard Guides.

Some exits go to a road, not to the resort. To Drang finishes near Drang village. That is a vehicle pickup arranged in advance, not a decision made on the ridge.

Light runs out in the drainages first. They're shaded by surrounding terrain and go dark well before the open faces do. A descent that's straightforward at 2pm is a different proposition at 4pm.

Committing to a descent commits you to its exit. That decision is made at the top, before the enjoyable part, not after it.

How the zones connect

A thing maps show badly and skiers need to know: the mountain is not a set of separate runs, it is a set of zones that feed into each other, and knowing which connects to which is what lets you plan a day rather than a run.

From the Apharwat upper station, the ridge is the distribution point. Everything out of bounds begins with a traverse, a short bootpack or a skin along it. Which direction you go from the station determines which drainage you end up in, and some of those decisions are effectively irreversible once made.

The ridge feeds three broad directions. Back toward the resort and the gondola line, the shortest exits and the terrain you can lap. Across the back of the massif, longer, colder, and committing. And out toward the far side and the drainages, which lead away from Gulmarg entirely.

Kongdoori is the junction. Almost every descent that comes back toward the resort passes through or near it, which makes it the natural regroup point, the natural bail-out, and the place a day gets restructured when the weather changes.

The drainages are one-way. Once you're descending toward Babareshi, Drang or Tangmarg, going back up is a climb rather than a lift ride. This is the single most consequential piece of mountain geography here and it is why exits get decided at the top.

The tree zones sit below the alpine, not beside it. Babareshi is reached by descending, not by traversing. That means a flat-light day spent in the trees is a day where getting back to the lift takes real effort, and it's worth planning laps rather than improvising.

Terrain nobody tells you about

Three things that are true of this mountain and don't appear on any competitor's terrain page.

There is a genuine gap between the beginner area and everything else. The developed lower mountain is gentle. The terrain above Phase 2 is serious. The intermediate ground between, Kongdoori and the chairlift terrain, exists and is good, but it is narrower than at a resort built around progressive intermediate cruising. Beginner-to-intermediate here is quick; intermediate-to-advanced is a bigger step than it would be in the Alps.

The tree skiing is underrated and under-used. Babareshi is the answer on more days than visitors realise, and it is nearly always empty because everyone is looking up at the ridge.

Grooming is limited by European standards and varies with conditions. For learning it barely matters, soft ungroomed snow at gentle pitch is a fine surface. For a skier expecting French corduroy, it is worth adjusting the expectation before arrival.
