Gulmarg is a very good snowboard mountain that has a few specific ways of ruining a snowboarder's day, and almost every one of them is a flat traverse.

Guiding a snowboarder well means choosing different lines from the ones you'd choose for a skier, avoiding traverses, planning fall-line exits, and managing the drainages where a skier can skate out and a rider is unstrapping and walking.

That sentence is the whole page, and it is the thing that almost no operator in this market takes seriously. Most Gulmarg guiding treats snowboarders as skiers with different equipment, gives them the same route, and lets them find out about the flat sections on their own. This page exists because that is a bad way to spend a week you flew a long way for.

What changes on a board

Traverses. The ridge access to several of the best lines involves side-hilling that a skier does without noticing. On a board it's an edge-hold problem, a speed problem, and at worst a walk. In deep snow a long heelside traverse is exhausting; on firm wind-affected snow it's an edge-hold problem where a slip has consequences. Our guides route boarders differently rather than telling them to keep up.

Exits and run-outs. The Babareshi drainage and the lower Drang exit have flat sections. Skiers pole through. Riders need to carry speed into them, and knowing where to start pumping is local knowledge that costs an hour if you don't have it. The specific skill is not strength, it's knowing, three hundred metres before the flat starts, that it's coming, and choosing a higher line to arrive with speed.

Deep snow trajectory. In the deepest conditions here, a board wants a steeper line than a skier does. Getting stuck mid-slope in waist-deep snow with a strapped-in board on a low-angle pitch is genuinely difficult to escape. Line choice for riders skews steeper for exactly this reason, which means the terrain a guide picks for a mixed group is a compromise and should be acknowledged as one.

Transitions in cold. Strapping in on an exposed ridge at 3,980 m in wind is miserable and slow. We plan transition points in sheltered spots because a cold group makes worse decisions. This applies more to riders than skiers simply because strapping in takes longer than clicking in, and doing it in wind with cold hands takes longer still.

One-at-a-time discipline costs riders more. On steep terrain where the group descends one at a time, the waiting is the problem, a rider sitting strapped-out on a cold ridge for fifteen minutes is colder and stiffer than a standing skier. Sheltered regroup points matter more, and we choose them with that in mind.

Falling in deep snow. A tree well or a deep-snow immersion is a more serious problem for a strapped-in rider than for a skier who can release. This is the specific reason our tree skiing around Babareshi is run with a partner system rather than a loose group, and why we brief it before entering the trees rather than after.

Getting up. Trivial on a piste, non-trivial in a metre of cold snow on a slope with no reference point. Riders who have never had to do it in deep snow discover it is a cardiovascular event at 3,700 m. This is a genuine argument for choosing a slightly steeper line, not a joke.

The terrain that suits riders best

  • Ridge faces off the upper station: open, steep, fall-line, no traversing. The best snowboarding on the mountain, and the reason experienced riders rate Gulmarg highly.
  • The Back: sustained pitch, cold snow, and a fall line you can ride top to bottom.
  • Main Gondola Bowl: open and visible, good for the first day.
  • Looker's Left & Right: excellent on a board for anyone with the ability for it. Confined and steep, but fall-line throughout, which is what a board wants.
  • Shark Fin, Great White, the Doggy Chutes: serious lines that ride very well, conditions and ability permitting.
  • Babareshi trees: good riding, with the caveat about the exit above, and worth doing with a partner system.
  • Monkey Hill: the right place for a first day.

The terrain that suits riders least, stated honestly

Worth publishing because it lets you plan rather than discover.

The long ski-outs toward Tangmarg and the lower Drang exit. Flat sections, unavoidable, and the single biggest reason a snowboard day here takes longer than the equivalent ski day.

Anything requiring a long ridge traverse to access. Some good terrain here is reached by a traverse that is trivial on skis and tedious on a board. We route around most of it; a small amount of terrain simply costs riders more to reach and we'll say so before you commit.

Low-angle powder. Beautiful for skiers, a trap for riders. There is a specific pitch band here, roughly the shallowest end of what's skiable, where deep snow means skiers float and riders sink, and we avoid putting boards on it.

Days after a warm cycle when the snow has become heavy and grabby. Skis handle grabby snow better than boards do. On those days we change the terrain rather than the pace.

Splitboard touring

Splitboarders are welcome on every touring objective on the Ski Touring page, with three adjustments.

Transitions take longer, so we build extra time into the schedule. A split transition is a genuinely slower operation than skins-off-skis, and on a full day that difference compounds, four transitions at three extra minutes each is not nothing when the light is going.

Steep icy skin tracks are harder on a split, so we set the track accordingly. A track angle that a ski tourer finds efficient can be at the edge of what a split will hold. Our guides set the track for the party they have, which is one of the practical advantages of a guided tour over following someone else's line.

Ski crampons matter more. Firm refrozen morning tracks are common here, and a split without crampons on one of those is a slow and occasionally exciting ascent.

Bring your own split, skins and pucks. Bring spare hardware, pucks, screws, a spare tail clip, tape. There is no splitboard-specific repair shop in Gulmarg, and a mechanical failure on a tour is a walk out.

Board choice for Gulmarg

Width and float. A directional board with genuine float is the right tool. The snow is deep and, high up, dry. A board that works in Europe on 20 cm over a firm base will feel undergunned in a metre of cold snow.

Length. Longer than your all-mountain default, if you're bringing a second board. Float and stability at speed matter more here than manoeuvrability.

Setback. Meaningful setback pays for itself in the deep days.

Stiffness. Enough to hold an edge on wind-affected snow, which you will meet on the ridge on most days regardless of what fell.

One board or two? If you can only bring one, bring the one that floats. The days where you wish you'd brought the stiffer all-mountain board are fewer than the days where you wish you'd brought more float.

Riding this snow well

The snow here rewards a slightly different approach from what most visiting riders bring, and a few adjustments make a large difference to how the week feels.

Ride the fall line more than you would at home. The instinct to work across a slope, developed on tracked European and North American terrain where the good snow is in patches, costs you here. The good snow is everywhere. Point it.

Speed early, not late. The fatal mistake in deep snow is starting a run slowly, sinking, and then trying to generate speed from a stationary position on a shallow pitch. Enter with speed and keep it.

Weight distribution, not lean. Riders who have only ridden shallow powder over a firm base learn to lean back. In genuinely deep snow over a soft base, leaning back for a full descent destroys your legs by the third turn. Setback on the board should be doing that work, not your rear leg.

Sluff behaves differently for a rider. On sustained steep pitch in cold snow, the snow you release travels with you. On a board you have less ability to step out of it laterally than a skier does, so the answer is more about line choice, riding a rib or a side rather than the gut, and about where you choose to stop.

Know where you're stopping before you drop. Stopping in a gully bottom, on a flat bench, or below a convex roll is worse on a board than on skis, because getting moving again is harder. Choose stopping points on features that let you leave.

Read the exit before the descent. The single most useful habit for riding here. Ask, at the top: where does this finish, and is any part of it flat? A guide will tell you. Asking makes you the client who has a good week.

Boots, bindings and the things that fail

Boots. Stiffer than your park setup, and broken in before you fly. Seven consecutive days is a lot of riding, and a boot that is marginal at home is unacceptable by day three at -12°C.

Bindings. Whatever you ride, plus a spare set of screws and a multi-tool. Binding hardware backing out is the most common mechanical failure on a trip like this and it is a five-minute fix if you have the tool and a long day if you don't.

Leash and stomp pad. Trivial items, and the stomp pad matters more than usual on flat exits where you'll be strapped in on one foot.

Gloves, bring two pairs. Strapping in repeatedly in cold snow soaks gloves faster than skiing does. A wet pair on day two of seven is a genuine problem.

Goggles for flat light. Storm days are some of the best days here and they are unridable with the wrong lens.

A snowboard week, roughly

Days one and two. Lower mountain and the Main Gondola Bowl. Acclimatisation, getting used to the snow density, and the guide watching how you ride. Also the days where boot and binding problems surface, which is a good reason for them to happen early.

Days three and four. The ridge faces off the upper station, open, steep, fall-line, and the terrain this mountain is best at for a board. If a storm has come through, this is when the trees around Babareshi come into play.

Days five and six. The named lines, conditions permitting. The Back, Looker's, and, for riders with the ability and on the right snowpack, the steeper terrain.

Day seven. Either the big objective, or a relaxed day, depending on what the week has produced and how the group is moving. We would rather finish with a good day than an ambitious one.

Splitboarders can substitute a touring day from day three onwards, and the Babareshi tour is a good first one because the transitions are at sheltered elevations.

Beginner and intermediate snowboarding

We run beginner snowboard packages and lessons on the lower mountain, and a beginner snowboarder progresses well here, the lower slopes are wide and the snow is soft, which is a considerably kinder learning surface than the firm groomed snow most people learn on. Falling in soft snow at low speed is the single biggest advantage a beginner can have, and Gulmarg provides it reliably.

Realistic progression for a complete beginner in a week: linked turns on the lower slopes by day three or four, comfortable riding on gentle ungroomed snow by the end of the week. That is faster than the equivalent week in a European resort, mostly because of the surface.

Intermediate riders, people who can link turns confidently and ride most of a resort at home, are in the best position of anyone arriving here, because the mountain's strengths are open fall-line terrain and soft snow, and both of those flatter an intermediate. The gap between "intermediate at home" and "riding well in Gulmarg" is smaller than the equivalent gap in a European resort full of firm groomed pitches and moguls.

Riding with a mixed group of skiers and riders

Most groups here are mixed, and it works, but only if the compromises are named rather than pretended away.

Line choice tilts steeper. A pitch that skiers find pleasant can be a trap for a board. On mixed days we bias toward the steeper end of what the group can handle, which occasionally means skiers get a slightly more demanding day than they would have alone.

Traverses get engineered out. Where a line's normal access is a long side-hill, we either find a different entry or accept the cost and say so in advance. Telling a rider "it's just a short traverse" is how you lose an hour.

Exits get chosen for the board. If two descents are otherwise equivalent and one finishes flat, the mixed group takes the other one. This is the single most consequential adjustment and it is invisible to the skiers in the group, who never find out what they didn't have to deal with.

Regroups get sheltered. Riders sitting strapped-out in wind get cold faster than standing skiers. Regroup points on a mixed day get chosen for the coldest member of the group.

Pace differs on the flats and on the traverses, and nowhere else. On the descents, a good rider and a good skier arrive at the bottom together. Groups who think riders are slower are usually thinking of the transitions.

If your group is heavily weighted toward one or the other, say so at booking. A group of six skiers and one rider works, the rider just needs a guide who is actively accounting for them rather than hoping it's fine.

What we ask riders to tell us at booking

Short list, and each item changes the plan.

Whether you're strapped or split. Splitboarders open up touring objectives and change the day's structure entirely.

Your stance and setup. Not out of curiosity, a rider on a park setup with soft boots and no setback is going to have a different week from a rider on a directional freeride board, and knowing in advance lets us set expectations honestly rather than at 3,980 m.

Whether you've ridden genuinely deep snow before. Riding well on a resort powder day over a firm base is a different skill from riding a metre of cold snow over a soft base. Both are fine; they need different first days.

Whether you've ridden at altitude. The strapping-in-and-standing-up cycle at 3,800 m is more taxing than people expect.

Any knee, ankle or wrist history. It changes what terrain we choose and how we plan the exits.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gulmarg good for snowboarding?

Yes. The lift-served terrain off Apharwat is steep, open and fall-line oriented, which suits a board well. The main constraints are traverse-heavy access to some lines and flat sections in a few exits, both of which good guiding routes around.

How much vertical can a snowboarder expect in a day?

Similar to a skier on the open terrain, around 4,000 to 6,000 metres on a lift-served day, with the caveat that days involving long exits take longer for a rider and may cost you a lap.

Can you splitboard in Gulmarg?

Yes. All skin-access touring objectives work on a splitboard, including the Apharwat summit at 4,210 m and the Drang skyline descent. Bring your own setup and spare hardware.

Are there flat sections in Gulmarg?

Some exits, particularly toward Babareshi and on the lower Drang side, have flat run-outs. Carrying speed into them matters, and a guide who knows where the flats begin will save you a walk.

Do you have snowboard guides, not just ski guides?

What board should I bring to Gulmarg?

Yes, on the lower mountain. Wide slopes and soft snow make it a kinder place to learn than most groomed European resorts. Backcountry riding is a separate proposition that comes later.

Can snowboarders do the Apharwat summit?

Yes, on a splitboard or on foot with the board on your pack. It's roughly 230 vertical metres above the Phase 2 station at 3,980 m.

Are tree wells a hazard in Gulmarg?

Deep-snow immersion is a real risk in the Babareshi trees on big storm days, and it is more serious for a strapped-in rider. We run tree days with a partner system for that reason.

Do riders and skiers get guided together?

Often, and it works when the guide plans for it. Mixed groups involve compromises on line choice, steeper for the board, less traverse, and a guide who doesn't acknowledge that is guiding for the skiers.

Is the gondola snowboard-friendly?

Yes. The gondola is a cabin lift, which is the easiest lift type for riders. The chairlift is a chairlift.

How does Gulmarg compare to Japan for snowboarding?

Japan has better tree riding and more reliable snowfall. Gulmarg has bigger open alpine terrain, more vertical, and far fewer people. Riders who prioritise big fall-line descents over trees tend to prefer Gulmarg.

What's the best month for snowboarding in Gulmarg?

Do I need avalanche gear as a snowboarder?

Is a splitboard worth bringing if I'm only here a week?
