Almost everything written about the Gulmarg gondola is written for someone who wants a photograph at the top. This page is written for someone carrying skis, which turns out to be a completely different set of questions.

The gondola is the reason Gulmarg's serious terrain is accessible at all. It delivers you to 3,980 m in about twenty minutes, a height that would take three hours of climbing anywhere else, and everything the mountain is known for begins within thirty seconds of stepping off it.

It is also the piece of infrastructure most likely to reshape your day without warning, and understanding how it behaves is the difference between a week of good days and a week of standing in queues and hotel lobbies.

How it's built

Two stages, plus a chairlift, and they behave as three independent systems for planning purposes.

The key structural fact: Phase 1, the chairlift and Phase 2 do not stand or fall together. Phase 2 stopping does not stop the other two. That single fact is what turns a wind-hold day from a lost day into a changed one, and most visitors don't know it.

How high it actually goes

The most-searched and most-wrongly-answered question about this lift.

The Phase 2 upper station is at 3,980 m. Some published figures give 3,950 m, Wikipedia's Gulmarg Gondola article gives 3,950 m in its infobox and 3,980 m (13,058 ft) in its body text; Skiresort.com gives 3,980 m. We use 3,980 m throughout this site and say where other sources differ rather than quietly picking one.

The gondola does not go to the summit of Apharwat. The summit is at 4,210 m (13,812 ft), roughly 230 vertical metres above the top station, and it is reached on foot or on skins along the ridge.

Why you'll see 4,200 m and 4,300 m everywhere. Those figures come from sites conflating the lift station with the mountain. They know the lift is high, they know the peak is higher, and they publish something between the two. It is an averaging error, repeated across dozens of pages that copy each other rather than the source.

Thirty metres of disagreement about the station changes nothing about your day. Four hundred and forty metres of confusion between the station and the summit changes what you think you're buying.

What you can ski from each stage

From the base (2,650 m)

Genuinely good skiing that most visitors treat as a waiting room on the way up.

Phase 1 Kongdori, the mid-mountain hub, intermediate terrain, and the junction almost every descent passes through on its way back to the resort.

The tree skiing below, dropping toward the drainage. The best flat-light terrain on the mountain and consistently the least crowded thing here.

The lower approaches to Monkey Hill and the gentle shoulders.

Why this matters: on any day Phase 2 isn't running, this is where the day happens, and it is a perfectly good day. Skiers who regard Phase 1 as a means to an end lose an entire category of days.

From the chairlift (~3,500 m)

Mary's Shoulder side. Open intermediate terrain, and the most underrated asset on the mountain for one reason: it runs independently of Phase 2. On a wind-hold day it is often the highest lift-served skiing available. See Chair Lift.

From Phase 2: Apharwat upper station (3,980 m)

Everything the mountain is known for.

The station sits on the Apharwat ridge, and the ridge is the distribution point for all of it, the Main Gondola Bowl back toward the lift line, Looker's Left & Right and the steep lines, The Backcountry across the massif, and the long descents toward the drainages.

And the thing to understand before your first ride up: there is no patrol above this station, no marking, no closures and almost no organised avalanche control. Wind holds, and how to plan around them

The single most useful section on this page, and the thing that most separates a skier's guide from a sightseer's.

Phase 2 stops for wind, and it stops often. The upper stage is exposed and the decision to hold it is a mechanical and safety judgement made by the lift operator. In a seven-day trip you should expect at least one day, sometimes more, where Phase 2 doesn't run, or runs for part of the day and then stops.

It carries no information about the snowpack in either direction. A day the gondola runs is not a day the terrain is reasonable. A day it doesn't is not a day the terrain is dangerous. Reading the lift as a safety signal is the most common and most consequential misreading a European skier makes here.

Information about closures is not communicated the way you'd expect. Advance notice is limited and English-language updates are not reliable. Building a plan that depends on a specific stage running at a specific time is a plan that will occasionally fail.

What to do about it, practically:

Always have a second plan. The chairlift, Kongdoori and the trees all work independently. A wind-hold day with a plan is a good day; a wind-hold day without one is a morning in a hotel lobby.

If you have touring equipment, bring it. Skinning works regardless of what the lift is doing, and a wind-hold day is frequently the emptiest and best day of a week for anyone with skins. See Ski Touring.

Know what happens if it stops while you're above it. If Phase 2 shuts with you on the ridge, the way down is skiing, and the way down from some terrain is long. This is the specific scenario where knowing the exits matters most and where an unguided visitor is most exposed.

Don't treat it as a lost day. Some of the best skiing of a week happens on days the top stage never turns.

Queues, and the timing strategy that follows

In the core season the Phase 2 queue is a real factor and can consume a meaningful part of a morning. This is not a minor inconvenience, it changes how many descents a day contains.

What actually works:

Start early. The single most effective thing. The queue builds through the morning and the first hour is worth two later ones.

Use Phase 1 and the chairlift while the Phase 2 queue is at its worst. Skiing rather than standing.

Storm days have no queue. They're also frequently the best days for the terrain that's skiable. This is the most consistently wasted opportunity in Gulmarg.

Late in the day thins out, but the light is going and the exits get longer in the dark.

Lapping matters more than it looks. If your descent returns you to the lift line, you can lap it. If it takes you into a drainage, that descent cost you the rest of the morning. Choosing lappable terrain on a heavy-queue day is a legitimate strategy.

Skiers use this lift differently from everyone else on it

Worth stating, because it explains a lot about the experience.

The great majority of people riding this gondola are not skiing. They are going up to see the view, stand in the snow, and come back down. That is a completely legitimate use of a cable car and it has three consequences for you.

The queue contains people who are not in a hurry, are not dressed for the top, and may be riding for the first time. Patience helps.

The busiest times track sightseeing patterns, not skiing ones, late morning onward, and heavily weather-dependent in the sense of clear and photogenic rather than good snow.

A clear bluebird day is the busiest day. It is also, for a skier, often not the best day. There is a genuine and underused advantage in going up when the sightseers don't.

Practically: ski when the mountain is quiet, which is early, and during storms.

A skier's day, structured around the lift

How the lift's behaviour shapes an actual day, which is the practical output of everything above.

Before you leave the hotel, two questions: is Phase 2 likely to run, and what is your plan if it doesn't. The second question is the one people skip.

First lift is worth more than any other lift of the day. Shorter queue, better light, colder snow, and the mountain at its emptiest. Every hour you delay costs you more than the hour.

The first ride up is an information-gathering exercise. You can see a great deal of the mountain from the cabin, where the wind has stripped and loaded, how much rock is showing, where yesterday's tracks are, whether the ridge is capped in cloud. Most people spend the ride looking at their phone.

Choose lappable terrain early, committing terrain late, or the reverse, deliberately. If the queue is heavy, descents that return you to the lift line are worth more. If the objective is a drainage descent, it needs to be the day's plan rather than an afternoon idea, because it ends your lift access for the day.

Watch the ridge through the morning. If wind is building, the window on Phase 2 may be shorter than the published hours suggest.

Don't leave the last lap until the last lift. The exits from this mountain are long, the light goes early in the drainages, and being on the wrong side of the ridge at closing time is a walk rather than an inconvenience.

The chairlift deserves more attention than it gets

A short section, because this is the most consistently overlooked piece of infrastructure here.

It reaches roughly 3,500 m on the Mary's Shoulder side. It runs independently of Phase 2. It is almost never queued the way the gondola is. And it accesses open intermediate terrain that suits exactly the skier who finds Kongdoori too gentle and the ridge too serious, which is a large fraction of everyone who comes here.

On a wind-hold day it is frequently the highest lift-served skiing available on the mountain. On a busy bluebird day it is where you go while everyone else queues. And for a skier in the middle of the progression from resort piste to Gulmarg off-piste, it is the most useful lift on the hill.

One planning note. The gondola is operated independently of us. Its schedule, its closures and its ticketing are not ours to set, and anyone telling you they can guarantee you a Phase 2 ride on a given day is telling you something that isn't in their control.

What to know before your first ride up

Dress for the top, not the bottom. There is a substantial temperature difference between 2,650 m and 3,980 m, and it is compounded by wind on the ridge. People arrive at the top under-dressed every single day.

Carry what you need for the descent. Once you're at the top station, going back down in the cabin is possible but it is not the plan, and the exits from the ridge are not short.

Know where you're going before you get on. The ridge is a distribution point and some of the decisions you make there are effectively irreversible, descend into the wrong drainage and going back up is a climb, not a lift ride.

Above this station the rules change. No patrol, no marking, no closures. Avalanche equipment and a partner who can use it are the baseline for anything above Phase 2, regardless of how gentle the slope in front of you looks. See Avalanche Safety.
