Day by day

  • Day 1, Stance, edges and sliding on purpose. Stance, edges and sliding on purpose

Morning starts with a proper set-up: boot fit first, because a loose boot is the single biggest cause of a frustrating first week, then finding out whether you ride regular or goofy, and setting your binding angles and stance width to match.

On snow, you'll learn to strap in and get up without exhausting yourself, to skate with the back foot out, the skill nobody teaches early enough and everybody needs in a lift queue, and to glide with the back foot resting on the stomp pad.

Then the core skill of Day 1: the heelside slip. Standing across the fall line, using the edge to control your descent, and coming to a complete stop whenever you decide to. You'll also learn to fall properly, fists closed, forearms taking the impact rather than an outstretched hand, roll rather than brace. This is why wrist guards are included and not optional.

  • Day 2, Toeside, and the day it's supposed to be hard. Toeside, and the day it's supposed to be hard

Toeside. Facing up the mountain, trusting an edge you can't see, on a slope your instincts are telling you to lean away from. Almost everybody finds Day 2 the hardest day of the week, and knowing that in advance is half of getting through it.

You'll work through the falling leaf on both edges, sliding down the slope in a zig-zag using only edge pressure, then garlands, which are turns that change your mind halfway through. Once heelside and toeside slips are both reliable, we move to the 8-5 slope and start using the beginner lift so your energy goes into riding rather than walking uphill.

If Day 2 feels like a wall, that is the course working as designed, not you failing at it.

  • Day 3, Linking turns. Linking turns

The day it comes together. Heelside to toeside, toeside to heelside, without stopping in between, driven by looking where you're going and leading with your front hand and hips rather than by throwing the board around with your back foot.

We move to Highland Park for longer descents, work on riding rhythm rather than one turn at a time, and finish the day with you riding a full run repeatedly without your instructor needing to talk you down it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a complete beginner learn to snowboard in 3 days?

Yes, with one-to-one instruction, but be clear about what "learn" means. Three days gets most adults to linked turns on beginner slopes with reliable speed control on both edges. It does not get you carving, or riding confidently on the mountain proper. Snowboarding takes longer to start than skiing and then progresses faster; three days is the realistic minimum to get through the hard part and out the other side.

Is snowboarding harder to learn than skiing?

Harder for the first two or three days, then it catches up quickly. By the end of a second week most snowboarders are level with most skiers, and often ahead by the third. If you have one short trip and want to be enjoying yourself by day three, skiing is the softer landing. If you're starting something you intend to continue, that first-week difference matters much less than it feels like it does.

Do I need my own snowboard gear?

No. Board, bindings, boots, helmet, goggles, gloves, wrist guards, pants and jacket are all included and set up for you on arrival. Bring thermal base layers, warm socks, and a second pair of gloves, strapping in repeatedly in cold snow soaks one pair faster than you'd expect.

Is the instructor shared with other people?

No. This package is one instructor to one rider for the whole course. On days one and two, when the corrections are about small things you cannot see yourself doing, that is worth more than at any other stage of your riding life.

What happens if the weather closes in?

Gulmarg gets storms, and lifts close. Your instructor will adapt, lower-elevation terrain still rides well in bad visibility, and the Baby Slope and Highland Park stay usable in conditions that shut the Gondola. Soft storm snow is also kinder to fall into than a firm groomer.

How far is Gulmarg from Srinagar airport?

About 50 km, which takes 1.5 to 2 hours depending on road and snow conditions. Your pick-up and drop are included in the package.

Is snowboarding in Gulmarg safe?

On the beginner slopes this package uses, yes, they are patrolled, in-bounds and well within a beginner's ability with an instructor alongside. We have run guided skiing and riding here since 2006 with zero avalanche accidents among our guided clients, and our backcountry team holds certifications from AIARE, Avalanche Canada and the Kashmir Avalanche Association. Emergency medical support is included for the length of your stay.

How many days does it take to learn to snowboard?

Most adults are linking turns around day three or four with one-to-one instruction, and riding gentle mountain terrain in control by the end of five days. Days one and two are hard for almost everyone. Three days is the realistic minimum to get past the difficult phase; five is what we'd recommend if you want the trip to feel like a snowboarding holiday rather than a course.

What is Gondola Phase 1 and do I need a separate ticket?

Phase 1 is the lower stage of the Gulmarg Gondola, running from the base at 2,650 m to Kongdoori at around 3,100 m. Your Phase 1 passes are included in this package. Phase 2, which continues to Apharwat at roughly 3,980 m, is expert and off-piste terrain and is not part of a beginner course.

Is 5 days better value than 3?

For most people, yes, and more so on a board than on skis. Three days is largely spent getting through the difficult start. Five days is where you get paid back for it: the Gondola, real descents, and turns that work on the mountain. The extra two days change what you're capable of more than the first three do.

Are there flat sections that will be a problem?

Not on the beginner terrain. The genuinely flat run-outs in Gulmarg are in the drainage exits toward Babareshi, Drang and Tangmarg, which are advanced terrain and nowhere near this course. We teach skating and speed-carrying from Day 1 regardless, because it's the skill that separates riders who enjoy a mountain from riders who dread the last 200 metres of it.

How fit do I need to be?

Everyday fitness is enough. The load on days one and two is getting up off the snow repeatedly; on days four and five it's longer continuous descents. Neither is an endurance event, and for beginners the limiting factor is almost always technique and confidence rather than fitness.

When is the best time to come?

Mid-January to mid-March is usually the most reliable window for snow depth and quality. March is often the best month to learn: longer daylight, softer snow, warmer temperatures and an emptying mountain. The season typically runs late December to early April. Message us before booking flights and we'll tell you what the mountain is genuinely doing.

Can a complete beginner really be carving after 7 days?

On groomed runs, with one-to-one instruction and a reasonable level of everyday fitness, most people can be making genuinely carved turns by Day 7. The sequence is what makes it possible: three days getting through edges and linked turns, two days of dynamic riding on Gondola Phase 1, then two days on chairlift terrain where pitch forces real edge commitment. Skipping steps is what makes riders plateau, and one-to-one teaching is what stops the schedule slipping.

What is the chairlift in Gulmarg and where does it go?

It runs from Kongdoori, at the top of Gondola Phase 1, up toward Mary's Shoulder. It opens terrain with more pitch and variety than the Kongdoori runs, and it is where our 7-day riders spend Days 6 and 7. Your chairlift passes are included.

Do I need to be fit for a 7-day snowboard course?

Everyday fitness is enough to start, but seven consecutive days on a board is a real physical load, more so early in the week, when getting up off the snow is most of the work. If you can walk uphill for an hour without stopping, you'll be fine. Days 6 and 7 are the ones that ask most of your legs, and that's by design: riding well when you're tired is the skill that separates a confident rider from a nervous one.

Will I ride powder?

Some, on Days 6 and 7, off the groomed edge and under close instruction, enough to understand how different a board feels in soft snow. Real Gulmarg powder riding, in the terrain the resort is famous for, is a guided activity we run separately for riders who already link turns confidently on pitch. This course gets you to the point of being able to book one.

Can 7 days be split between snowboarding and skiing?

Possible, and we would advise against it in a first week. Pick one, get to the point where it's fun, and add the other on a later trip, splitting the week usually means arriving at day seven having twice been a beginner and never stopped being one.

What if I progress faster or slower than the plan?

The day-by-day above is the typical progression, not a fixed script. Because you have your own instructor, the plan adapts to you, some riders are linking turns by the end of Day 2, others need an extra day before toeside stops being frightening and still finish the week carving. Nobody is held back by a group, and nobody is pushed onto terrain they aren't ready for.

Do I need wrist guards?

Yes, and they're included. Wrist injuries are the characteristic beginner snowboarding injury by a wide margin, because the instinct when you fall is to put a hand out. Guards are cheap, they work, and we ask every beginner to wear them for the whole week. Padded impact shorts for the tailbone are worth having too.
