Where to stay in Gulmarg depends on what kind of trip you're planning. Skiers and snowboarders usually prioritise proximity to the gondola. Families and couples often prefer a quieter hotel with better views, restaurants and comfortable rooms.
Gulmarg has accommodation ranging from budget guesthouses and traditional hotels to premium mountain resorts. In the ski season, location matters far more than it appears to on a map, snow, cold and busy mornings turn a short distance into a long one.
We've run guided skiing and instruction here since 2006, and we help visitors plan the whole trip from arrival to the mountain, accommodation included.
Quick answer: where is the best place to stay in Gulmarg?
For most first-time visitors, stay in Gulmarg itself. You're close to the meadow, the gondola, restaurants, rental shops and the main activities, and you avoid commuting up from lower villages every morning.
For a ski holiday specifically, the right hotel depends on your priorities:
| If your priority is | Look for |
|---|---|
| Skiing | Accommodation close to the gondola, less walking and less transport, especially after heavy snow |
| Luxury | A premium mountain resort with high-end rooms, restaurants, spa and better service |
| Budget | Guesthouses and smaller hotels, which can offer far better value if you're out all day |
| Families | Reliable heating, comfortable rooms, an on-site restaurant, easy access to the main area |
| A longer ski trip | Practical features, heating, drying space, breakfast, meals, equipment storage, easy access to your guide |
Best areas to stay in Gulmarg
Gulmarg is compact, but where you stay makes a noticeable difference.
1. Near the Gulmarg Gondola
Best for: skiers, snowboarders and first-time visitors
If skiing is the reason for your trip, staying close to the gondola is the most convenient choice. The gondola provides access towards Kongdoori and Apharwat, where most of Gulmarg's advanced and backcountry skiing happens, see Gulmarg Gondola Ski Guide.
Being nearby means you reach the lift more easily in the morning and return without a long commute. That matters most during heavy snowfall, which is when you most want to be out.
Choose this area if you:
- Are here primarily to ski or snowboard
- Want quick gondola access
- Are travelling with ski equipment
- Are booking private ski lessons
- Plan to ski several consecutive days
- Prefer convenience over the lowest possible rate
For serious skiers, proximity to the mountain should be among the first things you consider.
2. Around the meadow and golf course
Best for: couples, families, views, and a classic Gulmarg experience
Open mountain scenery, pine forest and views towards the higher peaks. Attractive for anyone combining skiing with sightseeing and relaxation, and several established hotels sit in this part of Gulmarg.
Choose this area if you want: mountain views, easy access to the meadow, a quieter atmosphere, a traditional Gulmarg feel, or a balance between skiing and sightseeing.
One winter caveat: walking distances here feel considerably longer in deep snow or on ice than they do in summer photographs.
3. Central Gulmarg and the main village
Best for: value, restaurants and travellers who want to explore
Closer to shops, restaurants and everyday services, with accommodation ranging from smaller hotels to guesthouses and budget properties. Good for travellers who aren't focused entirely on skiing, see Cafés & Restaurants in Gulmarg.
For skiers, check the actual walking distance to the gondola before booking. A property described as "close to the gondola" on a booking site can feel very different when you're carrying skis, boots and equipment through snow.
4. Tangmarg and Babareshi
Best for: budget travellers and visitors with their own transport
Below Gulmarg, with more affordable options and more choice. Tangmarg is roughly 13 km by road; Babareshi roughly 11 km.
The trade-off is the daily journey up. This works well if you have reliable transport, you're on a tighter budget, you're combining Gulmarg with other parts of Kashmir, or you don't mind commuting.
For a dedicated ski holiday, staying in Gulmarg is generally more convenient, and the reason is specific: the road is least reliable on exactly the mornings the skiing is best. Full detail on Budget Stays in Gulmarg.
Hotels by type
There is no single best hotel in Gulmarg. The right one depends on budget, travel style and why you're here.
Luxury
Premium rooms and suites, restaurants, spa and wellness, mountain views, higher service levels, better winter heating, more extensive facilities.
Particularly good for couples, families and anyone combining skiing with a premium Kashmir holiday. But if you're an experienced skier spending six or seven hours a day on the mountain, you may prefer to put more of the budget into guiding, equipment and ski days. See Luxury Ski-In, Ski-Out Hotels.
Mid-range and premium
Best for most ski travellers, and usually the best balance of comfort and price.
For a ski trip, look past the room photographs and ask practical questions:
- Is the room properly heated?
- Is hot water reliable?
- Is breakfast available early?
- Is there a restaurant for dinner?
- How far is it from the gondola, really?
- Can ski equipment be stored safely?
- Can wet ski clothing be dried?
- Can the hotel arrange transport?
- Does it operate throughout the ski season?
Those matter more than a decorative extra. See Premium Hotels in Gulmarg.
Budget hotels and guesthouses
Best for backpackers, younger travellers and long ski trips.
You don't need a luxury hotel to have an excellent ski trip. A clean warm room, reliable hot water, good food and a convenient location can matter more.
Before booking a budget property in winter, confirm the heating arrangement specifically. A room that's comfortable in autumn is a different proposition in the coldest part of the season. See Budget Stays in Gulmarg.
Choosing accommodation for skiing: in priority order
If skiing is the main goal, work down this list rather than starting with the room.
Location. As close to the gondola as practical.
Heating. Reliable, and working throughout winter rather than in principle.
Food. A good breakfast and dependable dinner. Options in the village are limited in a storm.
Equipment. Somewhere safe to store skis, and somewhere to dry boots, gloves and skins.
Transport. If you're not within easy walking distance, know how you'll get to the lift each day.
Ski support. If you're travelling internationally, having a local ski school or guide organise the mountain side makes the whole trip considerably easier.
Where to stay by who you are
Beginners
You don't need to be beside the gondola if lessons are on the lower slopes, but convenience still matters, after several hours learning to ski, walking far in ski boots is tiring.
Look for easy access to lessons, nearby rental, warm rooms, restaurant facilities, and help with transport. If you're booking a package, ask which hotels suit your lesson location and schedule. See Ski Lessons in Gulmarg.
Advanced skiers
Different priorities. If you're here for powder, freeride or backcountry, stay close to the gondola and plan your mountain days with a local guide.
Gulmarg's terrain extends well beyond the beginner slopes, the upper mountain around Apharwat has steep terrain, open bowls and serious lines, and conditions change quickly with snowfall, wind and temperature. See Skiing Mt. Apharwat.
For advanced skiers accommodation is only one part of the plan. The rest, avalanche safety, equipment, mountain access, guide availability, rescue equipment, fitness and altitude, current conditions, is covered across Gulmarg Ski Guides and Avalanche Safety.
Families
Prioritise comfort and convenience over simply being nearest the gondola. Look for family rooms, reliable heating, hot water, on-site dining, comfortable common areas, easy transport, safe walking routes, and staff who can help with local arrangements.
If some of the family is skiing and some sightseeing, the central Gulmarg area gives the best balance.
Couples
Gulmarg suits couples looking for snow, scenery and a quieter Himalayan trip. A premium resort gives the most comfort; smaller boutique properties and cottages offer a more intimate feel.
If you're both skiing, a comfortable hotel plus private instruction lets you choose your own times and progress at your own pace.
A dedicated ski holiday
Treat accommodation as part of your ski logistics rather than separately. A ski day looks like:
Breakfast to equipment to lesson or guide to mountain to lunch to more skiing to return to dry equipment to dinner
That's why location, heating and food matter. A cheaper hotel with a difficult daily commute may not be better value at all. Over four to seven days, convenience compounds.
The five questions that actually decide your week
The checklist further down is what any traveller should ask. These five are specific to a ski trip, they're the ones that determine how a week feels, and almost nobody asks them because almost nobody publishes them.
How far is it to the gondola, in ski boots, in winter? Not in metres on a map. Fifteen minutes' walk through deep snow in ski boots, twice a day, for seven days, is a completely different experience from five. This is the single biggest quality-of-life variable in a Gulmarg stay and the one most often misjudged from a booking page.
Is the heating reliable, or is it there in principle? Nearly every property has heating. Whether it holds up through a cold snap varies a great deal. Ask directly, and ask what happens in a power cut.
Is there hot water, and at what time? After six hours on the mountain this matters more than the room does. Ask specifically about the evening, when everyone in the building wants it at once.
Where do wet boots, gloves and skins dry overnight? By day three of a hard week you have a lot of wet equipment. Nowhere to dry it means starting each day in damp boots, miserable, and genuinely worse in cold. A drying room, a radiator, or even a reliably warm corner changes the week. Very few properties advertise this, so ask.
Can breakfast be early? Backcountry and touring days start before standard hotel service. Most places will arrange it with notice. Confirming at booking rather than at 6:30am is the difference between a good start and a bad one.
Ask those five of any property in any tier, and you'll learn more than a page of reviews will tell you.
What it costs
Accommodation prices vary considerably with season, hotel category, room type and demand. Peak winter periods are notably more expensive than quieter ones.
Don't choose on the advertised room rate alone. Check what's included, breakfast, taxes, heating, extra beds and transport all change the real total. And confirm whether the rate is per room or per person, which is the most common billing surprise here.
When to book
Book early for the main ski season. January and February are the busiest months for skiers, snowboarders and winter visitors, and good properties and preferred room categories become hard to find.
Decide accommodation before finalising lessons, guiding and equipment, so the rest of the trip can be built around where you're staying. December, late March and April are much easier.
What to check before booking
- Is the hotel open on my dates? Some properties operate seasonally.
- How far is it from the gondola? Check the actual location, not the description.
- How is the room heated? Ask about winter heating specifically.
- Is hot water available all day? Especially important after skiing.
- Is breakfast available early? Skiers start early; touring days start earlier.
- Is there an on-site restaurant? Useful in heavy snow and after a long day.
- Can I store ski equipment? Ask before arriving with ski bags.
- Can the hotel arrange transport? Necessary if you're not walking distance.
- What happens during heavy snowfall? Ask how access is handled.
- What's included in the rate? Meals, taxes, heating and other charges.
What Gulmarg accommodation is like, honestly
Worth setting expectations, because "hotel" imports assumptions from wherever you've travelled and Gulmarg is its own place.
It is a small mountain village in winter, not a resort town. Dining is limited, nightlife more so, and most guests eat breakfast and dinner where they sleep because there isn't much alternative. Most people find that a feature.
Heating, hot water and power are the three variables. Every tier has heating; reliability differs. Hot water is usually available and demand peaks sharply in the evening. Power cuts happen at every level of property, so bring a power bank regardless of what you're paying.
Facilities are not the European equivalent at the same tier. A premium hotel here is not a premium hotel in the Alps, and a luxury property is not a Courchevel luxury property. What you're buying is comfort and location in a Himalayan village at the end of a mountain road, which is a different product and priced accordingly.
What is often better than expected: the food, and the hospitality. Properties across every tier here tend to feed guests well, and a place that includes dinner is doing you a favour in a village with limited options.
What varies most between properties: distance to the lift, how the place functions during a storm, and whether there's anywhere to dry equipment. Those three, not the room.
Gulmarg or Srinagar?
Some visitors consider basing in Srinagar and travelling up each day. That works for a sightseeing trip; it's poor for a dedicated ski holiday. The journey takes time and skiing needs an early start.
Staying in Gulmarg lets you start earlier, avoid commuting, spend more time on the mountain, rest between sessions, see Gulmarg after the day visitors leave, and adapt when conditions change.
If you're combining skiing with a wider Kashmir itinerary, splitting nights between Srinagar and Gulmarg is often the better answer.
Our advice
You don't need the most expensive hotel in Gulmarg to have an excellent trip. Choose accommodation that matches your itinerary.
- Skiing is the priority to close to the gondola, reliable heating
- Comfort is the priority to premium or luxury
- Budget is the priority to guesthouses and mid-range in central Gulmarg
- Travelling with children to heating, food, easy access
- Skiing a week or longer to practical facilities over luxury extras
- Planning backcountry to access, guide support and mountain logistics

Plan your stay
Gulmarg is a small mountain destination, but the right accommodation makes a real difference. Choose your location based on what matters most, ski access, comfort, budget, views, family facilities or convenience.
And if skiing is the reason you're coming to Kashmir, plan accommodation together with your lessons, equipment and guiding rather than separately.
