Gulmarg is safe to ski and it contains genuine mountain hazards. Both are true. It is not a conventional resort: most terrain is unmaintained, avalanche hazard is real and documented, ski patrol coverage ends at the controlled area, and rescue takes hours rather than minutes. How you ski here matters more than where you ski.
Gulmarg is one of the most rewarding ski destinations in the Himalaya. Understanding what separates it from a conventional resort is the most useful preparation you can do before you arrive.
The mountain is not a network of marked pistes with predictable snow and immediate patrol response. It offers deep powder, steep faces, bowls, forest, ridges and backcountry routes. Some of that terrain is reached from the gondola. Much of it takes you well beyond the developed ski area.
That freedom is why skiers travel here from forty-plus countries. It is also why mountain safety here is a working discipline rather than a disclaimer.
A safe day involves terrain, weather, snowpack, visibility, navigation, group management, communication, equipment, fatigue, and what happens if something goes wrong. This page covers all of it at breadth and links to the page that answers each properly.

Is Gulmarg dangerous?
Gulmarg can be skied safely, and it contains genuine mountain hazards. Neither statement cancels the other, and any source giving you only one of them is selling something.
Risk here depends on where you ski, your ability, current weather, snow conditions, terrain, visibility, your group's experience, your equipment, and your decisions. The last one carries more weight than the rest combined.
The beginner areas on the lower mountain are a different proposition from the alpine terrain above the gondola. A guided powder day is a different proposition from entering remote backcountry independently.
Popularity does not make a mountain safe. More visitors on the same terrain changes nothing about the snowpack, the weather or the consequences.

Is there avalanche danger in Gulmarg?
Yes, and it is well documented. Avalanches occur here, including in terrain reached by experienced skiers from the ski area.
This page does not teach avalanche safety. Avalanche Safety in Gulmarg covers snowpack structure, how weak layers form, problem types, rescue equipment and avalanche decision-making. Read it before skiing anything above the marked area.
What belongs here is the acknowledgement, because it is part of understanding the mountain.
What the Gulmarg Avalanche Center publishes
The Gulmarg Avalanche Center is a non-profit publishing backcountry avalanche, snow and weather information for this area. Using it is a basic part of skiing here.
Four things visitors consistently get wrong about it:
It uses the North American Avalanche Danger Scale. Five levels, 1 Low through 5 Extreme. If you have read forecasts in North America or Europe, the scale is familiar.
It defines ten avalanche problem types, not the handful most skiers know: loose-dry, loose-wet, wind slab, storm slab, wet slab, persistent slab, persistent deep slab, cornice fall and glide avalanches. Reading which problem is forecast tells you far more than reading the number.
Its advisories use three elevation bands: Alpine at 3,000 m and above, Transitional near 3,000 m, Sub-Alpine below. This is the detail that makes the forecast usable, and almost nobody explains it to visitors. With the village at 2,650 m and the top station at 3,980 m, essentially everything you ski from the upper gondola sits inside the alpine band. When an advisory describes an alpine problem, it is describing the ground you are about to stand on.
It is seasonal. The centre's archive shows the 2026 season ending on 26 April 2026, with a notice that operations would resume in December. At the edges of the season, no advisory is published at all. If you are travelling in late November, early December or late April, plan for the forecast's absence rather than assuming it will be there.
Ski tracks are not evidence of stability
This is the most important thing on this page.
On 13 March 2024, a Gulmarg Avalanche Center advisory described a persistent slab problem on north and northeast aspects above 3,000 m, and stated:
"As seen in last Thursday's incident in South Apherwat bowl, they are difficult to trigger and may occur on slopes already skied with numerous tracks."

That sentence overturns the most common piece of informal reasoning in skiing.
A slope with ski tracks on it has not been proven safe. Tracks tell you somebody skied it without triggering anything. They tell you nothing about what the snowpack is doing now, nothing about whether the next skier finds the weak spot, and nothing about whether the twentieth skier loads the one part of the slope the first nineteen missed.
A slope can carry one track, ten tracks or fifty and still hold a persistent problem capable of producing a large avalanche.
Tracks are evidence of previous travel, not of current stability. For visitors who use tracks as their main safety signal, often without noticing they are doing it, this is the single most valuable sentence on this website.
Persistent weak layers, and why they are not the whole story
Some of the more serious problems here are persistent: weak layers buried in the snowpack that survive for weeks, stay invisible from the surface, and produce large avalanches long after the storm that formed them. Gulmarg advisories have repeatedly documented persistent slab and deep persistent slab problems involving facets, depth hoar and surface hoar.
Treating persistent layers as the only problem is its own mistake. That same 13 March 2024 advisory listed three problems at once: wind slab, persistent slab and loose wet. Across the archive, wind slabs, storm slabs, wet snow and weak basal layers all appear at different points in the season.
The problem changes through the winter. The habit of checking it should not.

Low and Moderate do not mean no risk
Danger ratings are not a traffic light. At Low or Moderate, specific terrain features can still hold heightened risk, and a mountain-wide rating does not mean every slope has identical stability. The centre's advisories emphasise evaluating specific features and accounting for local variation.
The rating is where the assessment starts, not where it ends.
Why does some Gulmarg terrain have no tracks?
Usually because experienced local skiers are deliberately leaving it alone, not because nobody has found it. Gulmarg is not an undiscovered mountain.
Terrain stays lightly skied because of its avalanche history, its shape, its exposure, its access or its consequences. A line that looks superb can be entirely wrong under the current snowpack, and the people who know that are the ones not skiing it.
Sometimes the absence of tracks is a reason to stop and ask questions rather than a reason to drop in. Fresh snow is an invitation to evaluate.
Terrain history does not show on the surface
A guide's value here is not only knowing where the best snow sits. It is knowing which slopes have a history of avalanching, which gullies have produced large releases, which terrain traps the consequences, which areas hold persistent problems, and which lines get left alone until conditions improve.
A slope can look perfect after a storm and still be a poor choice, and nothing about its appearance will tell you that. This is knowledge built over seasons. It cannot be improvised or looked up, and it is the part of guiding that matters most on this particular mountain.
Past avalanche activity does not close a slope permanently. It means the terrain deserves careful evaluation, and that in some conditions the right answer is lower-consequence ground until the snowpack improves.

Avalanche terrain is not only about steepness
Slope angle is the number everyone knows. On this mountain, terrain shape matters as much.
Shape: bowls, gullies, convexities, start zones, wind-loaded slopes, terrain traps, large connected slopes, ridges and transitions all behave differently.
Consequence: an avalanche with a clean run-out and an avalanche that carries a skier into a gully, over a cliff or into a deep terrain trap are not the same event, even when the avalanche itself is identical.
Risk is probability and consequence together. The second is the one visitors skip. A small avalanche in the wrong place is worse than a large one in the right place.

Weather, wind and visibility
Wind changes the mountain quickly
Wind lifts snow from one part of the mountain and deposits it on another, building wind slabs on lee and cross-loaded features. The Gulmarg Avalanche Center treats wind slab as a distinct problem type for exactly this reason.
A single storm can leave completely different snow on different aspects. One slope scoured. Another heavily loaded. A third holding older weaknesses underneath. Apharwat is an exposed mountain and this happens constantly.
New snow is not automatically safe
Fresh powder is why people come here. Fresh snow also loads the snowpack, and it combines with wind, existing weak layers, rapid loading and temperature change to create new problems or worsen existing ones.
"It just snowed" is not a reason to enter steep terrain. It is a reason to find out what the new snow is sitting on.
Why flat light is a safety problem, not a comfort problem
Gulmarg produces heavy snowfall, strong wind, fog, cloud, flat light, and rapid changes between them.
Poor visibility makes it hard to read terrain transitions, convexities, cornices, gullies, obstacles and route exits. In unmaintained terrain there is no groomer smoothing out the feature you cannot see.

Navigation
Natural terrain looks entirely different in a storm. A route skied yesterday becomes unrecognisable once snow covers the landmarks, visibility drops, tracks fill in and wind redistributes the surface.
Following someone else's tracks is not a navigation strategy. Tracks disappear. Tracks suited a different group. Tracks lead into terrain that is no longer appropriate, or that you cannot exit.
Knowing the exit matters as much as knowing the line. Gulmarg has run-outs that finish somewhere inconvenient, traverses that must be entered with speed, and drainages that take you a long way from where you meant to be.

Cold, exposure and fatigue
Fatigue is a mountain hazard
After several hours of skiing at altitude, strong skiers become slower and less precise. It affects balance, reaction time, technique, concentration and, above all, decision-making.
The risk is not that a tired skier falls. It is that a tired skier makes a worse choice about where to ski, late in the day, when the consequences of that choice are highest.

Cold matters most once something has already gone wrong
On a normal day cold is a comfort question. The moment someone is injured or the group has to wait, it becomes the main problem.
A minor injury turns serious when the person is wet, exhausted, wind-exposed, unable to move and without insulation. In Gulmarg, waiting is realistic, because help takes time. Rescue & Emergency Procedures in Gulmarg explains how much time.
Carry enough clothing for an unplanned stop, including an insulating layer you are not wearing. That is not overpacking. It is the difference between an inconvenient wait and a dangerous one.
Equipment is part of safety, and only part
Your equipment should match your objective. Depending on where you are going, that means appropriate skis or board, properly fitted boots, helmet, goggles, suitable clothing, a pack, transceiver, probe and shovel, communication equipment, first aid and repair kit.
Equipment does not make a mountain day safe.
- A transceiver does not prevent an avalanche
- An airbag does not make dangerous terrain safe
- A phone does not guarantee communication
- A GPS does not guarantee navigation
Equipment supports good decisions. It does not replace them. The most dangerous version of a well-equipped skier is one whose equipment has made them confident enough to go somewhere they should not.
In avalanche terrain the fundamental companion-rescue kit is transceiver, probe and shovel. Every member of the group carries all three and knows how to use their own. Knowing your transceiver is somewhere in your pack is not the same as running an efficient search under pressure.

Group management and communication
Both have their own pages. Here is what you need to know before you get to them.
Group management. The safest terrain choice still goes wrong if a group is poorly run. Before setting off, establish who leads, who follows, where you regroup, what happens if someone falls or gets separated, how you communicate, and what happens if the weather turns. In complex terrain, spacing should suit the hazard, and a group should never spread so far that helping each other becomes difficult. See Risk Management on the Mountain.
Communication. Do not assume your phone will work. Coverage is variable and unreliable away from developed areas, prepaid SIMs issued outside Jammu & Kashmir generally do not work in the region, and satellite messengers and satellite phones are restricted in India in a way that has led to travellers being detained at airports. What happens when something goes wrong
An accident here is not an accident in a city. Help takes time, and in Gulmarg that usually means hours rather than minutes.
Your group will need to stabilise the situation, protect the injured person, communicate a location, keep them warm, organise assistance and wait.
Two facts worth knowing before you need them:
Rescue is not a single organisation on standby. The Gulmarg Ski Patrol operates under the Tourism Department, and serious incidents have drawn a joint response involving police and Army resources alongside it.
Out-of-bounds rescue is not guaranteed. The most comprehensive independent source in this market states it plainly: it is not the snow safety team's responsibility to rescue people out of bounds, though they will help where they judge it safe to do so. (skigulmarg.com) That is an accurate description, and every skier going beyond the marked area should understand it.

The part that matters most: decision-making
Good mountain safety is not about finding a way to ski every line. It is knowing when a line is appropriate.
The questions:
- What is the current hazard, and where is it?
- What is the consequence if something goes wrong?
- Does this group have the ability to manage it?
- Can we get out safely?
- What happens if conditions deteriorate?
If the answers do not support the objective, change the objective.
Safety is also not decided once at breakfast. Conditions change, people tire, visibility drops, wind moves snow, the gondola stops, a route turns out harder than expected, and the original plan stops making sense.
Observe, assess, decide, act, reassess. Then repeat.

The bottom line
Gulmarg offers exceptional skiing because it is a real mountain rather than a controlled environment. That is also why it deserves respect.

- Do not assume tracks mean stability
- Carry appropriate equipment and know how to use it
- Have a communication plan, and know what you may legally carry
- Know what happens if something goes wrong, and how long it takes

- Be willing to turn around
Do not confuse a good-looking mountain with a safe mountain.
The best days here happen when terrain, conditions, group ability and decision-making line up. That is not luck. It is the work.
