The first is lift-served off-piste: you ride the gondola, you ski terrain that is unmarked, unpatrolled and unmaintained, and you may traverse or bootpack a short way to reach it. You need alpine equipment plus a full avalanche safety kit and the training to use it.
The second is genuine ski touring: you put skins on, you climb under your own power, you go beyond the reach of the lift, and self-sufficiency stops being a virtue and becomes a requirement. That needs a different binding, a different boot, and a list of things you will probably never use and must absolutely have.
This page covers both, with the touring setup as the main subject. It is a specification page, what to carry and to what standard. It deliberately does not teach avalanche technique, because Avalanche Safety in Gulmarg already covers that at length and splitting the subject across two pages would make both worse.
One thing first, and it is not a formality. Gulmarg's terrain is not controlled the way a resort's off-piste is controlled. The mountain is exposed, wind-affected and genuinely avalanche-prone, and the consequences of a mistake here are not resort consequences, rescue resources are limited and evacuation is slow. Equipment is the last line, not the first. Terrain choice, training, forecast awareness and a guide who knows the mountain all come before anything on this list.
Boots and the walk-mode question
Boot fit is covered on the Ski Equipment Guide and is not repeated here. What belongs on this page is the compatibility question, which is where people actually come unstuck.
A touring boot needs a genuine walk mode, a mechanism that releases the cuff so it hinges freely as you climb. The difference between a boot with a real walk mode and a boot with a token one is enormous over a long day; it is the difference between climbing and dragging.
Sole standards are the trap. Boot soles come in several standards, and not every sole works safely in every binding:
- Alpine soles (ISO 5355): flat, hard, for standard alpine bindings. No walk mode, no tech fittings
- Touring/GripWalk-type soles: rockered and rubbered for walking. Compatible with bindings certified for them, and not with every alpine binding
- Tech (pin) fittings: metal inserts at toe and heel that a pin binding grips. A boot either has them or does not
Tech fittings are the one to check before you fly. A pin binding without tech fittings in the boot is not a compatibility inconvenience; it simply cannot be used. If you are hiring skis with pin bindings and bringing your own boots, confirm your boots have tech fittings before you travel, not at the counter on your first morning.
Flex versus weight is the touring boot trade. Lighter boots climb better and ski worse. For Gulmarg, where the descents are long, steep and often in deep or variable snow, we would bias toward the downhill end of the range, the climbing here is a means to a serious descent, not the point in itself. A very light race-oriented boot is under-gunned for what Apharwat gives you on the way down.
Bindings: the real decision
This is the section most people arrive on this page looking for.
Tech (pin) bindings
Metal pins grip fittings in the boot toe and heel. The toe pivots freely for climbing.
In favour: dramatically lighter, far more efficient over a long climb, and the standard for anyone touring seriously.
Against: release characteristics vary by model and are less consistent than alpine bindings; some are not certified to the same release standards; they require compatible boots; they need a slightly more careful technique to step into, particularly with snow packed into the fittings, which happens constantly in cold, deep snow.
Verdict for Gulmarg: the right choice if you are genuinely touring. Learn to step in reliably before you are doing it on a cold, windy slope with a group waiting.
Frame bindings
A conventional alpine binding mounted on a frame that hinges at the toe.
In favour: works with normal alpine boots, release behaves like an alpine binding, cheaper.
Against: heavy, and the weight is at your foot where it costs most. You lift the whole binding with every step. Over a long climb the difference against a pin setup is punishing.
Verdict for Gulmarg: acceptable for occasional short climbs. Not what you want for a real touring day.
Hybrid bindings
Pin toe with an alpine-style heel, aiming at downhill performance with touring capability.
In favour: better downhill feel and more consistent release than many pin bindings, still far lighter than a frame.
Against: heavier than a pure pin setup, and more expensive.
Verdict for Gulmarg: a strong option for exactly the skier this mountain attracts, someone who tours to access serious descents rather than someone who tours for the climbing.
And if you are not touring at all
Use an alpine binding. A skier riding the gondola and skiing off-piste gains nothing from a touring binding and gives up robustness and release consistency. Buying touring bindings "in case" is a common and pointless expense.
Whatever you use: brakes must be wide enough for the ski, and release settings must be calculated rather than guessed. Both are said on Piste & All-Mountain Setup for Gulmarg and both are worth repeating here because both get ignored.
Skins
Skins are simple until they fail, and they fail in cold conditions in ways people are not prepared for.
Material. Mohair climbs better and glides better; nylon grips better and lasts longer; mixes split the difference and are what most people should use. For Gulmarg's cold, dry snow, either works, this is not the decision to agonise over.
Fit. Skins should be cut for the ski, running close to the edges without covering them. A skin that overlaps the edge is a skin you cannot hold a traverse on, and traversing on skins is a real part of moving around here.
Glue is the part that matters, and cold is what breaks it. Cold glue does not tack. A skin that peels mid-climb in deep snow is not a minor annoyance, it is a stop, a mess of snow stuck to the adhesive, and often an end to that climb.
What actually works, in order:
- Keep the skins warm before you use them. Inside your jacket on the approach, not in the outside pocket of the pack. This is the single most effective thing you can do.
- Do not let snow touch the glue. Once it does, the glue is compromised for the day. Use the mesh or cheat sheet every time, even when you are cold and in a hurry.
- Dry them properly overnight, glue side out and away from direct heat. A radiator will cook the adhesive.
- Carry skin wax or a glue patch. Small, light, occasionally saves the day.
- Refresh the glue between seasons. Old glue is the most common cause of a failed skin and the easiest to prevent.
Carry a spare tip or tail fixing. Fixings break, and a skin that will not stay attached at the tip is a skin you are carrying rather than using. There is nowhere in Gulmarg to buy one.
Ski crampons, boot crampons and ice axe
The section where Gulmarg diverges from a soft-snow tour in a maritime range.
Ski crampons clip between binding and ski and bite into firm snow when skins alone will not hold. Apharwat is a wind-affected mountain, and wind-affected snow sets hard. A slope that skinned beautifully in soft snow last week can be firm enough this week to make skinning across it genuinely difficult and, on a steep traverse above consequential terrain, dangerous.
Bring ski crampons if you are touring here. They are light, they take almost no space, and the day you need them there is no substitute. They must match your binding and your ski width, check both before you travel.
Boot crampons and an ice axe are a step further and depend entirely on objective. For most ski touring in Gulmarg they are not needed. For steeper lines, for firm bootpacks, and for certain approaches to the higher terrain, they are. This is a question to ask your guide about the specific objective, not to answer from a website, carrying them without knowing how to use them adds weight and false confidence, which is a worse combination than carrying nothing.
A whippet or self-arrest grip is a reasonable middle ground for firm steep snow where a full axe is more than you want. Same caveat: it is only useful if you have practised with it.
Avalanche safety equipment: the specification
How to use this equipment is on Avalanche Safety in Gulmarg, and that page matters more than this section does. What follows is specification only.
Transceiver. Digital, three-antenna, current generation. Check the battery before every day, cold drains batteries faster than you expect. Use alkaline batteries unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise; rechargeables lose voltage unpredictably in cold and the meter lies about it. Replace batteries below the manufacturer's stated threshold, not when they die. Know your own device, in your own language, before you arrive.
Shovel. Metal blade, not plastic. Avalanche debris sets hard, and a plastic blade can fail against it. This is not a weight-saving to make. A shovel with an extendable shaft moves more snow per minute, and moving snow per minute is the entire measure of a shovel.
Probe. 240 cm minimum; 280–320 cm is better. Metal, quick-deploy. Practise deploying it with gloves on and cold hands, because that is the only condition in which you will ever do it for real.
Airbag pack. A worthwhile addition and never a substitute for the three items above. Airbags improve the odds of staying near the surface; they do nothing about trauma, they do nothing if the trigger is not deployed, and they do nothing at all if you are the one doing the digging for someone else.
Airbags in Gulmarg specifically: airbag packs are available to hire from the Gulmarg Snowkings ski shop, and pre-booking may be required. This is worth taking seriously as an option, because flying with an airbag is genuinely awkward, compressed-gas and some electronic systems are subject to airline rules that vary by carrier and by route and change without notice. Flights to Srinagar covers the airline question. If you are bringing your own gas system, ask us in advance about cylinder refilling locally, do not assume it.
The thing this section cannot supply. Equipment without practice is decoration. A transceiver search you have not rehearsed will take you several times longer than one you have, and the survival curve for a buried person is steep and unforgiving in exactly that window. If you have not practised a search in the last twelve months, practise before you ski off-piste here, and if you are skiing with us, tell us honestly where your training stands. We would far rather know.
Pack, navigation and communication
Pack size. 25–35 litres for a day tour. Big enough for skins, layers, food, water, safety kit and spares; small enough not to swing about on the descent. It must carry skis both diagonally and A-frame, you will use both depending on the bootpack.
Dedicated avalanche-tool compartment. A separate sleeve for shovel and probe, so you can reach them without emptying the pack onto the snow. Every second counts and this is a free saving.
Water, and the cold problem. Hydration bladders freeze, the hose first, then the bite valve, then everything. At Gulmarg's temperatures this happens routinely. Use an insulated bottle, carry it inside the pack rather than on the outside, and if you use a bladder, blow the water back down the hose after every drink.
Food. More than you think, and something that stays edible when frozen. Chocolate bars turn into bricks; nuts, dried fruit and softer bars keep working.
Navigation. A phone with offline maps is genuinely useful and genuinely unreliable in cold, battery percentage drops without warning and phones shut down. Carry it warm, carry a power bank warm, and do not let it be your only plan. For anyone touring seriously, a map, a compass and the ability to use them are the backup that does not have a battery.
Communication. Mobile coverage in the mountains around Gulmarg is not something to rely on. Anyone going into remote terrain should think about a satellite messenger or a radio, and should agree a plan with somebody who is not on the mountain. Group radios are extremely useful for a party spread out on a descent in trees.
A headtorch. Small, light, and the difference between an inconvenient late finish and a serious one. Days are short in mid-winter, and a descent that takes longer than planned is a normal thing rather than an emergency, unless you cannot see.
Spares and the repair kit: the part that is different here
Every touring page on the internet has a repair-kit section and most of them are copied from each other. This one is worth reading, because the consequence of a failure in Gulmarg is different: there is no shop at the bottom of the lift, no ski retail between here and Srinagar two hours away, and no chance of buying a specific binding part anywhere nearby.
A failure that would cost you an hour in Chamonix can cost you the day here, and if it happens on a tour it can cost you a lot more than that.
Carry, at minimum:
- A multi-tool with the correct drivers for your bindings: a Pozidriv bit, not a Phillips, if that is what your bindings take
- Spare binding screws, and a way to fix a stripped screw hole
- A hose clamp or two: the classic ski repair, capable of holding a broken binding together well enough to get you down
- Ski straps, three or four: for lashing a broken ski to a boot, holding a splitboard together, strapping skis to a pack, and a dozen improvisations
- Duct tape or ski repair tape, wrapped around a pole rather than carried as a roll
- Spare skin tip fixing, and skin wax or a glue patch
- Spare pole basket if yours are proprietary
- Spare transceiver batteries, carried warm
- A spare pair of gloves: the most-used item on this list, every season
- A lightweight emergency shelter or bothy bag for any group going beyond easy return
- A first aid kit you have actually looked inside, with a way to improvise a splint
Cable ties and a length of cord cost nothing and solve problems you cannot predict.
The rule underneath all of it: the question is not "will this break?" but "if it breaks up there, what happens next?" In a resort the answer is "I walk to a shop." Here the answer is "I walk out, or somebody carries me." That difference is why this list is longer than the one you would write for the Alps, and it is the most useful thing on this page.
Splitboards
Splitboarding in Gulmarg works, and the terrain suits it, the tree skiing and the open bowls both ride well on a board, and the climbs are not technical in most places.
What you need: the splitboard itself, split-specific bindings and interface, skins cut for the split halves, and collapsible poles. Crampons for a splitboard are available and are worth having for the same firm-snow reason as ski crampons.
Splitboard-specific realities here:
- Transitions take longer than a ski touring transition. Factor it into the group's planning, and practise until it is quick, cold hands make a slow transition much slower
- The traverses are harder on a split than on skis. Same Gulmarg traverse problem as Powder Ski Setup for Gulmarg describes, with the added complication of doing it in split mode
- Bring spares specific to the split. The interface hardware is the part that fails and the part you absolutely cannot replace here
On availability: contact us directly before assuming you can hire splitboard equipment in Gulmarg. We would rather answer the question honestly in advance than have you arrive expecting something. If you splitboard seriously, plan on bringing your own setup.
Clothing for touring versus lift-served days
Clothing generally is on the gear hub. One touring-specific point belongs here because it is different enough to matter.
Touring generates heat on the way up and loses it fast at the top. The lift-served layering plan, dress for the cold, stay dressed, does not work when you are climbing. You will sweat, and sweat that cools at a windy transition at altitude is how people get genuinely cold.
What works: climb slightly cold, with the insulating layer in the pack. Put it on the moment you stop. Take it off before you start climbing again, even though you do not want to. Skiers who climb comfortably warm arrive at the transition wet, and then the wind finds them.
A dry base layer in the pack for a long day is a small luxury with a disproportionate effect on how the descent feels.
