Hiring equipment in Gulmarg is not like hiring equipment in a resort with six rental shops on the main street. It is a smaller operation in a smaller place, and the things that matter are different: what is here at the time you arrive, whether you told anyone you were coming, and how quickly you can be fitted and skiing.
This page explains how hire actually works at our shop, what to do before you travel, what happens on fitting day, what to bring even if you are hiring everything else, what happens if something breaks, and what we will and will not promise you in writing.
What this page does not do is list a fleet. That is a deliberate decision and it is worth explaining, because most hire pages do exactly that.
Why this page does not list every ski we have
Because a hire list published in August is a promise made about February, and stock changes.
Equipment gets damaged. Popular sizes go out and come back late. A storm cycle empties the wide skis and a quiet week empties nothing. If we published a detailed inventory, some of it would be wrong by the time you read it, and you would not find out until you were standing at the counter having flown a long way on the strength of it.
We would rather under-promise in writing and over-deliver in person. So this page tells you how the process works, which does not change, and answers the specific availability question the moment you ask it, which is the only way to answer it honestly.
If you need a specific thing, a particular width, a particular length, a splitboard, a touring setup, ask us before you book your flights, not after. We will tell you straight whether we have it. Sometimes the answer will be no, and you will be glad you asked in October rather than in January.
What we can state with confidence right now:
- Avalanche airbag packs are available to hire from our shop. Pre-booking may be required.
- Avalanche safety equipment is available to hire from our shop. Pre-booking may be required.
Those two matter most, because they are the items with the highest consequence and the ones hardest to bring with you, an airbag on an aircraft is a genuine problem, and one this solves.
Why pre-booking matters more in Gulmarg than anywhere you have skied
In a large resort you can walk into a shop on the morning of your first day and be skiing an hour later, because there are several shops and deep stock in every size. Gulmarg does not work like that, for three reasons.
One: it is a village. The supply of hire equipment in Gulmarg is finite, and it does not restock overnight. There is no warehouse two valleys away and no delivery arriving tomorrow. What is in Gulmarg in January is what is in Gulmarg in January.
Two: demand spikes with the weather. When a big storm cycle lands, everybody wants a wider ski on the same morning. That is precisely the morning on which walking in and asking is least likely to work.
Three: the supply chain is long. Getting anything to Gulmarg means Srinagar and then roughly two hours of mountain road that weather can close. That is the whole reason there is no quick restock.
So the practical advice is simple: tell us what you need before you arrive. Not because it is an upsell, there is nothing to sell you on this page, but because it is the difference between having the right equipment on day one and making do.
Pre-book especially if you need: an avalanche airbag, a full avalanche safety set, anything at the wide end, anything at the long end, anything at the short end for a child, a touring setup, or a snowboard in a large size. Common sizes in the middle of the range are the least of the problem.
What to tell us when you book
The more you tell us in advance, the better the equipment fits you on day one. This is the list, in the order it is useful:
About you:
- Height and weight. Weight honestly: it goes into the binding release setting, and under-reporting it is not a harmless vanity
- Age, which also affects release setting
- Boot size, if you are hiring boots. Your normal shoe size is a starting point, not an answer
- What boots you own, if you are bringing your own: the make, model and sole type. This is the one that avoids a compatibility problem at the counter
About your skiing:
- How long you have skied and how often. "Ten years, one week a year" and "ten years, thirty days a year" are different skiers
- What you ski at home: groomed runs, off-piste, both
- What you ski on at home, if you know the width and length. It tells us more than any self-assessment
- Whether you have skied powder before, honestly. This changes what we recommend more than anything else on the list. Piste & All-Mountain Setup for Gulmarg explains why we take this question so seriously
About your trip:
- Your dates, including arrival day and the time you land
- What you plan to ski: lessons, lift-served off-piste, touring
- Whether you are skiing with a guide or instructor, and whether that is with us
- Anything specific you need: a particular ski, an airbag, a touring setup, kit for a child
And tell us if you are unsure. "I don't know what I need" is a completely reasonable message to send us, and it is a better one than a confident guess. Describe what you ski at home and what you hope to ski here and we will tell you what to bring and what to leave. Sometimes the answer is "bring nothing but your boots."
Arrival and fitting day
Fit your equipment the day you arrive, not the morning you want to ski.
This is the single most useful piece of logistical advice on this page. Fitting takes time, and doing it at 8 a.m. on your first ski morning means either a rushed fit or a late start, and often both.
Allow real time for it. A boot fitting done properly is not a five-minute transaction. You want to stand in the boots, walk in them, flex them, and change one if it is not right. That is not possible when there is a group waiting to get on the gondola.
What to bring to the fitting:
- The socks you intend to ski in. One pair, not two: two pairs compress the foot and make it colder. Fitting in the wrong socks makes the whole fitting worthless
- Your own boots, if you have them, so we can check them against the bindings
- Any orthotics or custom footbeds you use
- Your height and weight, if you did not send them in advance
What happens at a fitting:
Boots first, if you are hiring them, because everything else depends on them. Shell fit before liner comfort, a liner packs out over a week and a shell does not change. If a boot is wrong, say so at the shop rather than discovering it at the top station.
Then skis, matched to your ability, your weight and what you plan to ski. This is where the conversation about width and length happens, and where the pages on this site become useful, a guest who has read Piste & All-Mountain Setup for Gulmarg or Powder Ski Setup for Gulmarg and arrives with an opinion is easier to fit well than one with no view at all.
Then bindings, with the release setting calculated from your height, weight, age, boot sole length and skier type. It is a calculation, not a preference, and it is not a number to inherit from a friend.
Then everything else, poles at the right length, a helmet that actually fits, and safety equipment if you are taking it.
If you are taking avalanche equipment, do not just collect it. Turn the transceiver on. Check the battery level. Deploy the probe once. Extend the shovel handle. If it is an airbag, have the deployment mechanism explained and understand how it is armed. Doing this in a warm shop takes three minutes; doing it for the first time on a cold slope takes far longer and by then it matters. Avalanche Safety in Gulmarg covers the training that has to sit behind the equipment.
Bring your own boots if you own boots
This is said on the gear hub and it is worth saying again on the hire page, because it is the one thing hire cannot fully solve.
Ski boots have to fit a specific foot. Skis, poles, helmets and safety equipment all have tolerances. Boots do not. A hire boot that is close is fine; a hire boot that is one size out will change how you ski and will make your feet cold, which at 3,980 m stops being a comfort question.
If you own boots that fit, bring them, and carry them as hand baggage if your airline permits it. If a checked bag goes astray you can hire everything else and still ski. You cannot easily replace a boot that fits your foot. Flights to Srinagar covers baggage on the domestic leg, which is where bags most often go astray on this route.
If you do not own boots, hiring is completely reasonable, most of our guests do. Just build in the time on arrival day.
Changing equipment during your trip
This is the real advantage of hiring locally, and most people do not use it.
A skier who arrives cautious and finds their feet by day three is a different skier by day four. A week that starts firm and gets a metre of snow on Wednesday is two different weeks. The ski that was right on Monday may not be the ski that is right on Thursday, and if you hired it here, that is a conversation rather than a problem.
Come and talk to us if:
- The conditions have changed significantly and you want more or less float
- Your skiing has moved on and you want to step up
- Something does not feel right: a boot pressure point, a binding that has released when it should not have, a ski that feels wrong underfoot
- You want to try something. There is no reason not to
On boot problems specifically: come back the same day, not on day five. A pressure point on day one becomes a bruise by day three and a ruined week by day five. Almost every boot problem is fixable if we hear about it early and almost none of them are fixable once you have skied on it for four days.
Damage, loss and what happens if something breaks
Normal wear is normal. Edges get dinged, bases get scratched, topsheets get marked. Skiing unmaintained terrain does this to equipment and we do not expect equipment back in the condition it left.
Genuine damage, a broken ski, a destroyed binding, a lost item, is a different conversation, and it is one we would rather have clearly and in advance than awkwardly at the end of your trip. The terms that apply to your hire will be set out when you book. Read them, and ask if anything is unclear.
If something breaks on the mountain:
- Come to us. Do not improvise a repair that makes the damage worse, and do not keep skiing on a binding that has released unexpectedly
- A binding that releases when it should not have is a stop-skiing item, not an inconvenience. Bring it in
- We would far rather swap something out than have you ski on equipment you do not trust. That is what a local shop is for and it is the whole argument for hiring here rather than flying your own equipment in
Travel insurance: check whether yours covers equipment, and check whether it covers off-piste and touring at all. Many standard policies do not, and the exclusion is usually written in language that a skier does not read as an exclusion. Off-Piste Skiing in Gulmarg covers the insurance wording question in more detail, it is worth reading before you buy a policy rather than after.
Servicing, waxing and edges
Bring your own equipment in for a service if it needs one. Skis that have been in a bag since last April are usually dry, and dry bases are slow bases, noticeably so on Gulmarg's traverses and flat run-outs, where every bit of glide is worth having.
What is worth doing here:
- A wax at the start of a trip, and again mid-trip on a long stay. The cold, dry snow that Gulmarg often produces is abrasive and strips wax faster than warm snow does
- An edge check. Not a full sharpen for most people: you do not need race edges here, but a check for burrs and damage
- A base check if you have hit something, which in unmaintained terrain with rocks and stumps is a matter of when rather than if
- A binding check if the skis have not been used in a while, or if the release setting was set for a different boot
What we cannot do is guarantee that any specific part is available. If a binding needs a proprietary component, it may have to come from somewhere else, and "somewhere else" is a long way away. This is the strongest practical argument for bringing spares, see Backcountry & Touring Setup for Gulmarg for the full repair-kit list.
Hire alongside lessons and guiding
Most of our guests are here for instruction, guiding or both, and the equipment side is simpler when they run together.
Booked together, we know what you will be skiing before we fit you. A guest on a beginner course and a guest on a backcountry trip need different equipment, and if the trip is booked with us we already know which one you are. That is a better fit than any form can produce.
- Ski & Snowboard Lessons in Gulmarg: instruction from beginner to advanced
- Gulmarg Ski Guides: guided skiing on the mountain
- Gulmarg Ski Packages: trips including guiding, accommodation and transfers
- Gulmarg Backcountry Ski Packages, touring and backcountry trips
Guided guests should discuss safety equipment when they book, not on the morning. If you are bringing your own transceiver, tell us the model. If you need one, say so early. If you have not practised a search recently, tell us that too, it is not a test, and knowing it changes how we plan the day.
If your luggage is delayed
It happens on this route more than people expect, because the domestic leg is where bags go astray.
We can get you skiing. Hired skis, poles, helmet and safety equipment can put you on the mountain while your bag catches up. Boots are the hard part, which is the argument for hand baggage.
Tell us as soon as you know, ideally from the airport rather than the next morning. A few hours of warning is the difference between skiing on day one and losing it.

What we will not do
Worth stating plainly, because it is the reason to trust the rest of the page.
We will not tell you we have something we do not have. If you ask about a specific ski, a specific size or a splitboard and we do not have it, you will be told so. A guest who arrives and finds the equipment missing has been failed on day one of a trip they planned for a year, and no amount of good guiding recovers that.
We will not put you on equipment that is wrong for you because it is what is on the rack. If the honest answer is that you should bring your own, we will say so, even though that is worse for us.
We will not sell you an airbag hire you do not need. If you are skiing the marked area with an instructor, you do not need one. If you are going beyond it, you need a transceiver, shovel, probe and training first, and the airbag after that. That priority order does not change because we hire airbags.
