There is no airport in Gulmarg and no train that takes you to the resort. For most international visitors the journey means flying into India, connecting to Srinagar Airport, then travelling by road through Tangmarg before climbing the final mountain road.
It looks complicated on a map. In practice, once flights and a transfer are organised, it's straightforward.

Where is Gulmarg?
Gulmarg is a mountain resort in Jammu & Kashmir in northern India, in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas. The village sits at 2,650 m (8,694 ft).
The nearest major airport is Srinagar Airport (SXR), roughly 50 km away. Srinagar is the gateway for essentially every international skier heading to Gulmarg.
Gulmarg is considerably higher than Srinagar, so the last part of the journey is a climb from the Kashmir Valley into the mountains, which is why winter conditions matter on that section and not on the rest.
The route, step by step
Fly to India. Arrive at a major international airport: Delhi is the most common gateway.
Connect to Srinagar. A domestic flight to Srinagar Airport (SXR). We arrange domestic flights for guests, tell us your international arrival and we'll book the Srinagar leg around it.
Srinagar Airport to Gulmarg by road. A pre-arranged private transfer is simplest, especially with equipment.
Through Tangmarg. The town below Gulmarg and the last major settlement before the mountain road climbs.
Arrive in Gulmarg. Check in, sort equipment, prepare for the first ski day.
For most visitors this is far easier than combining trains, buses and local taxis while carrying ski equipment.

This is not a journey to plan around an exact arrival time. Snowfall, road conditions, traffic, visibility and vehicle restrictions all affect the drive, and any of them can change between your flight landing and your car reaching Tangmarg.

Srinagar Airport to Gulmarg
Once you land, the rest is by road.
For skiers carrying equipment, a pre-arranged private transfer is usually simplest, your driver meets you, loads the equipment, and takes you directly to your accommodation.
The road runs through the Kashmir Valley to Tangmarg, where the mountain section begins. The scenery changes noticeably from there: valley gives way to forest and mountain terrain as the road climbs.
Arrange the transfer before you arrive rather than solving it at the airport. With a ski bag, a boot bag and normal luggage, negotiating transport on arrival is the least enjoyable way to start a trip.
The Tangmarg to Gulmarg road
Tangmarg sits roughly 13 km below Gulmarg and acts as the gateway to the upper mountain. This final section deserves particular attention in winter.
After significant snowfall the road can be snow-covered and icy, and vehicles suitable for winter mountain conditions may be required. Conditions change quickly, it can be clear when your flight lands in Srinagar and snowing hard by the time you reach Tangmarg.
Heavy snowfall is exactly what you came for, and the same storm that makes tomorrow's powder makes today's transfer slower. During significant snow, expect slower traffic, snow-covered roads, reduced visibility, delays, possible changes to vehicle arrangements and longer journey times.
That's normal winter mountain travel. If your arrival coincides with a storm, don't schedule anything important immediately after your expected arrival time. Get to Gulmarg, check in, sort your equipment, and start tomorrow.
Should you travel to Gulmarg the same day you land in Srinagar?
Usually yes. If your flight arrives at a reasonable hour and conditions allow, most visitors continue straight up. There's generally no reason to spend a night in Srinagar simply because you've landed.
Staying overnight in Srinagar makes sense when: your flight arrives very late, severe weather is affecting the road, you want to see the city, your itinerary deliberately includes it, or your onward arrangements require it.
For a dedicated ski holiday, most skiers prefer to reach Gulmarg as soon as practical.
Should you add a buffer day?
For an international ski trip, yes, wherever the itinerary allows.
Winter mountain travel always contains variables. Flights get delayed. Baggage arrives late. Weather changes. Road conditions slow a transfer. And the gondola can be affected by wind independently of any of that.
If you've travelled halfway around the world for a week of skiing, one flexible day is worth more than the day it costs. This matters most if you're connecting through multiple airports.
Where to put the buffer: at the end rather than the beginning, if you can only have one. A delay getting in costs you a morning. A delay getting out costs you an international connection.
The return journey: the part people forget
Most travel guides cover getting there and stop. The return is where trips actually go wrong.
The road is the same road, and it's just as weather-dependent on your last morning as on your first. A storm on departure day is a genuine possibility during the season you want to be here.
Do not book a same-day international connection out of Delhi. If the Gulmarg road is slow, you miss Srinagar. If Srinagar is delayed, you miss Delhi. If you miss Delhi, you miss a long-haul flight, and that is an expensive way to end a good week.
Give yourself a night in Delhi, or at minimum a long connection. It converts a potential disaster into an inconvenience.
Leave earlier than feels necessary on departure morning. We schedule return transfers with deliberate margin for exactly this reason.
A last ski morning is a nice idea and a risky one. If your flight is that afternoon, ski the day before instead. Nobody has ever regretted the extra margin; plenty of people have regretted the last run.
Travelling with skis or a snowboard
International skiers regularly arrive in Gulmarg with their own equipment. The important part is planning for the whole journey rather than just the international flight.
Your airline's rules may differ between international and domestic sectors. Do not assume the domestic carrier applies the same policy as the long-haul one.
Check before departure:
- Ski and snowboard baggage allowance
- Maximum bag dimensions
- Weight allowance
- Excess baggage rules
- Whether sports equipment must be booked in advance
- Rules for carrying avalanche equipment
Avalanche airbag packs
Check with every airline on your itinerary before departure. Airbag systems may contain compressed gas cylinders, electronic systems or batteries subject to dangerous-goods regulations. Requirements vary by system and by carrier.
Do not rely on what another skier was allowed to carry on a previous trip. Rules differ between airlines and change. Ask your carrier directly, and get the answer in writing if you can.

Should you bring your own equipment at all?
Depends on your level and what you plan to ski.
Beginners and recreational skiers often find renting in Gulmarg easier than travelling internationally with skis.
Advanced powder and backcountry skiers usually prefer equipment they already know, particularly boots.

Can you reach Gulmarg by train or bus?
Train: there is no railway station in Gulmarg. Rail can form part of a wider Indian journey, but it isn't the simplest option for a skier with equipment. If your goal is skiing rather than overland travel, fly to Srinagar.
Bus: public transport exists within Kashmir but is generally inconvenient for international ski travellers. Consider what you're carrying, a large ski bag, boots, avalanche equipment, winter clothing and normal luggage. A private transfer removes most of that difficulty.
For backpackers travelling without equipment, public transport is worth exploring. For a ski holiday, convenience usually wins.
Getting to Gulmarg from where you are
From Delhi
For many international visitors Delhi is the gateway. The simplest journey is Delhi to Srinagar by air to Gulmarg by road. Travelling the whole distance overland adds considerable time.
If you're arriving in Delhi internationally, pay particular attention to the connection, you may need to clear immigration, collect luggage and equipment, clear customs and check in again for the domestic flight. Missing the Srinagar connection can cost you a ski day.
From the UK and Europe
Generally a flight to India through a major hub, then onward to Srinagar. When comparing options, don't look only at fare:
Total journey time. One clean connection often beats a cheaper multi-connection itinerary.
Baggage allowance. A cheap ticket becomes expensive once ski baggage is added.
Connection time. Enough to move equipment between flights.
Arrival time in Srinagar. Arriving earlier gives more flexibility on the road.
From Australia and New Zealand
A longer journey, often with multiple sectors, which makes connection planning more important. Avoid an itinerary where a small delay on one flight collapses the whole thing. Leave time for baggage transfer and the domestic connection. One sensible buffer is worth more than a few hours saved.
From North America
Among the longest journeys, typically connecting through Europe, the Middle East or another hub. Once in India the pattern is the same: international arrival to Srinagar to Gulmarg.
Given the length, treat your arrival day as recovery and preparation rather than expecting to ski.
Visa and entry requirements
International visitors need to check current Indian visa and entry requirements for their nationality before travelling. These change, and travel advice about Kashmir differs between governments.
Do not rely on an old ski forum post, a social media comment or a travel blog for something this important.

Money before you reach the mountains
Worth organising before you travel up.
Gulmarg is a village, not a city. Electronic payments are increasingly common across India, but don't build a trip around always having a working card terminal, mobile network or ATM exactly when you need one.
Carry a backup payment option and sort your money in Srinagar rather than after you arrive.

Before heading into the mountains, know:
- Where you're staying
- Who is collecting you
- How to contact your driver
- Your accommodation's contact details
- Where your ski equipment is
- Your first ski-day arrangements
If you need cash or anything else, Srinagar has considerably more options than Gulmarg. Once you arrive, you want to be thinking about skiing rather than solving basic logistics.
Arriving in Gulmarg
The first thing most international visitors notice is that Gulmarg doesn't feel like a purpose-built ski resort. There's no resort entrance where everything begins. Hotels, the meadow, the ski areas and the gondola are spread around the settlement.
That makes accommodation location matter. Staying near the gondola makes ski-day logistics simple; staying further out means arranging transport before your first morning. See Where to Stay in Gulmarg.
After checking in: settle into the room, confirm your ski arrangements, organise equipment, meet your instructor or guide if arranged, rest, and start skiing the following morning.
When should you arrive before your first ski day?
Arrive the day before wherever possible.
Landing in Srinagar, driving into the mountains, checking in, organising equipment and skiing the same day creates pressure you don't need. Arriving the previous afternoon or evening gives you time to settle.

Winter versus summer
The route is the same year-round: Srinagar to Tangmarg to Gulmarg. The difference is the final mountain section.
In summer, road travel is straightforward. In winter, snow and ice are part of the journey.
For a skier this shouldn't feel unusual, you're travelling to a Himalayan ski destination in winter. What matters is the right vehicle, realistic timing and transport organised in advance.
Travelling as a group
Worth its own note, because group logistics scale badly and most people discover that on arrival.
Vehicle capacity is about equipment, not people. Six skiers with six ski bags, six boot bags and six suitcases do not fit in a vehicle sized for six passengers. Tell whoever arranges your transfer how much equipment you're carrying, not just how many of you there are.
Groups arriving on different flights need a plan. Waiting at Srinagar for a delayed member costs the whole group the good part of the road window. Decide in advance whether you travel together or in waves.
One person should hold the arrangements. Driver contact, accommodation details, the guide's number. Splitting that across six phones with patchy connectivity is how groups get separated.
Book transport as one arrangement rather than several. Two vehicles arranged together will wait for each other; two arranged separately will not.
If something goes wrong
Your flight to Srinagar is cancelled. Common enough in winter. Tell your accommodation and your transfer driver as early as you can, both can usually adjust. If it's a late cancellation, a night in Delhi and a morning flight is generally better than a very late arrival into a mountain road.
You land but your ski bag doesn't. More common than cancellations. Report it before leaving the airport, get a reference, and give the airline your Gulmarg accommodation rather than a Srinagar hotel. Then arrange rental for the first day or two, see our ski shop. Do not lose a ski day waiting for a bag.
The road is closed or the transfer can't run. Wait in Srinagar rather than pushing. The road reopens; a bad decision on a mountain road in a storm doesn't unwind.
You arrive much later than planned. Nothing is lost. Check in, sleep, start in the morning. This is exactly why the first day is a settling day rather than a ski day.
You can't reach your driver. Have your accommodation's number as well as the driver's, and have both written down rather than only in a phone. Connectivity is patchy at both ends of this journey.
Common travel mistakes
Booking a tight connection. International travel with ski equipment takes time.
Planning your first ski day on arrival day. Arrive first, ski tomorrow.
Assuming ski bags are included. Check every airline separately.
Arriving without a transfer. Possible to solve on arrival; much easier in advance.
Assuming the road always takes the same time. It doesn't. Winter controls the mountain.
Relying entirely on cards. Have a backup.
Choosing accommodation without checking its location. Two hotels both described as "in Gulmarg" produce very different ski days.
Booking a same-day international connection home. The single most expensive mistake on this list.
